Here is our step-by-step guide for what to do following a flood.

Safety first

  • Evacuate the building and do not re-enter until you are sure it is safe.
  • Switch the electricity and gas off at the mains before beginning any clean-up.
  • Floodwater is often contaminated and should be treated as such even if it appears clean:
  • Wear suitable protective clothing when touching anything that has come into contact with the water.
  • Thoroughly wash hands before preparing food, eating, drinking or smoking.
  • Keep young children, the elderly and those with immune system deficiency away from the property until it has been dried out.

Report and record

  • Contact your insurance company or broker to notify them and begin a claim.
  • Take photographic evidence of the flood damage to your building, equipment and goods.
  • Make a list of damaged items and their condition.
  • When the water has subsided, mark the high water point, including the date, on each wall.
  • Take detailed notes of actions you have taken.

Limit further damage

  • Where possible, clear any residue, water or mud.
  • Remove and dispose of saturated carpets, rugs and upholstery.
  • Move furniture to a flood-free area or raise it off the floor on blocks.
  • Protect wooden furniture by putting plastic under the feet to prevent it from absorbing more water.
  • Open doors and windows to air the property and help with drying.

Your insurance company will send a loss adjuster to survey the damage, determine what remedial work is necessary, and appoint professionals. Your building will need specialist disinfecting and drying out. And depending on the severity of the flood, you may also need remedial building work.

Buying a second-hand rug? Here are some things to keep in mind.

When buying a new rug, going second-hand is a great and much cheaper alternative to buying new. Not only that, but it contributes to living a more sustainable lifestyle. However, there are some things that you need to consider if you’re thinking about buying a rug second-hand. Things you may not have even been aware of!

The last thing you want when you get a new rug is for it to immediately go up in flames. Is the rug dirty or stained?

How we are celebrating ServiceMaster Brands Founders Day.

The 1st of October was a special day here for all of ServiceMaster Brands: Founders Day. Our annual observance across the ServiceMaster Brand family celebrates ServiceMaster Brands’ worldwide second anniversary as a stand-alone company. That’s why we’re paying homage to our founders and communities who made ServiceMaster Brands as we know it today. To do this, our franchisees across the UK are giving back. In Leicester, our ServiceMaster HQ and ServiceMaster Clean Leicester team have come together to support the local Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army is an organisation designed to help local people through Charity Shops, Food Banks and also provide support to homeless and elderly people and anyone else locally who is in need.

Providing donations

We supported them in these endeavours by providing supplies and cash donations to help them in their cause, particularly in supplying items in great demand, such as food and women’s and babies’ toiletry products. The items brought in or purchased as staff donations were compiled and back by our staff at the end of September and dropped off at the local Salvation Army branch.

How we have been supporting Alzheimer’s Patients this year.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a month designed to raise awareness around Dementia and other forms of Alzheimer’s, and to support people across the globe who are living with the condition. This year the focus is on raising awareness, with the theme “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s” continuing from 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a particular impact on the condition and the people living with Alzheimer’s worldwide. However, a 2019 report found that much of the world’s general population still believes that Dementia is a normal result of the ageing process – which highlights the need for more knowledge about Alzheimer’s and its conditions to be more widespread.

This year, ServiceMaster Clean, along with the rest of ServiceMaster Brands UK, has partnered with Dementia Friends, an initiative from Alzheimer’s Society as one of their partnered businesses.

What are Dementia Friends?

Dementia Friends is an initiative aiming to change the perception of dementia. They strive to create a better quality of life for those living with the condition and to further our understanding of the condition. They provide a host of useful information to inform members of the public, as well as partner with businesses to help improve their services and make them more accessible and Dementia friendly. This year, we have worked with them to make sure that our services our as such, and that we can provide the right support and service to our customers that are living with Dementia.

Furthermore, we have taken part in multiple fundraising initiatives as part of ServiceMaster Brands UK and have managed to raise £1,378.50 for the charity – which will go towards funding services from the Alzheimer’s Society for research into care and cures, providing support and training, and campaigning for the rights of people living with dementia. Kevin Riley, the director of ServiceMaster Clean Hampshire, has raised £7906 for motor neurone disease and cancer support charities through a 10th annual charity golf fundraising day.

Eleven years ago, Kevin Riley, the owner and director of ServiceMaster Clean Hampshire sat down to talk with some of his friends who were all also going through the same difficult experience as him, watching a family member fight a life-threatening or debilitating illness. Though she sadly passed away, Kevin’s mother was struggling with motor neurone disease (or MND) at the time. This is a condition that affects key nerves in the brain and spinal cord known as motor neurones. MND gradually stops messages from these neurones from reaching muscles, which causes them to degenerate – meaning it can affect a person’s life in significant ways, including how they walk, talk, breathe, eat, and even think.

Speaking to friends whose relatives were living with cancer, Kevin and his friends felt compelled to act. Kevin says he recalls saying “We’ve just got to do something.”

From this conversation, what has come to be known as the Richard Morgan Golf Memorial golf day was born, named in memory of Richard Morgan, a friend who passed away from cancer.

Due to missing a year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year marked the 10th year in which the day has been held, and Kevin and co-organiser Shaun Munce are delighted to have been able to raise £7906 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, bringing their total raised over the decade-long effort to a whopping £63,706!

Over the years the fundraising efforts have also taken different forms, such as charity football matches, but it has stayed loyal to the same group of people, and for these same worthy charities in honour of Kevin’s mum and Richard. The golf day takes place locally at the Cams Hall Estate Golf Club in Fareham, where around 80 participants are organised into 20 or so teams and staggered across the 18-hole course throughout the day. Kevin explains that the teams are made up of “friends, family [and] mates of mine from my cricket team. I’ve got a mate who’s a fireman as well so we’ve got a lot of firefighters that come along – and their friends to pitch in,” he says. “I think because everyone enjoys it so much [and] it’s a good day out … Especially after COVID everyone just wanted to get together, tell stories and just have a drink and play a bit of golf. Half of them probably don’t play golf really, it’s just the whole day out,” he laughs.

The money is raised from a combination of admission fees, part of which goes to cover the cost of the green fee for the actual golfing. The rest is raised through other efforts from Kevin and Shaun. “I do a football blackout square that they do [for] football teams,” Kevin explains. “Whoever wins [that] wins the prize of whatever it is. So, I do two of those, one is for £5 for each team [which is] worth a golf voucher of £250. And then the other one, ServiceMaster Clean, we donated … a massive hamper that’s worth 500 quid. It was £10 a team per team. And then that raises £1200 I think on just [those] two blackouts.”

Along with this, Kevin and Shaun have partnered with different sponsors over the years for raffle and auction prizes, of which all proceeds go to the charity. “We have a table of raffle prizes where people donate stuff,” Kevin says. “We get a lot of golf balls that people give us as well. So, the bigger prize is the good four balls.” And this year included some lovely ServiceMaster Clean branded golf balls and equipment!

This year Kevin and Shaun also partnered with Bladez Toys, who design and manufacture toys in the UK for leading brands like Hot Wheels® and Barbie®, who donated a remote-control camper or van and Barbie car for the auction. There was also extra fun to be had at a disco, which was DJed free of charge for family members of the teams and of the golf club’s staff, making for a brilliant day out for all after the quiet of the COVID lockdowns, and all for great causes. Kevin says he and Shaun aren’t keen to rest on their laurels however and are already in discussion of how to do even better next year and keep raising money for Macmillan and the MNDA.

As Kevin highlights, “with cancer, everyone knows someone who’s got it [or] had it.” As a charity that is also undoubtedly familiar to most in the UK, Macmillan Cancer Support provides many services to support people struggling with cancer. From their famous coffee mornings to a support line, and providing information on types of cancer, treatments and financial support, the work Macmillan do is a lifeline for many during difficult and dark times. As they say themselves, “Cancer is not going anywhere. And neither are we … There’s around 3 million people living with cancer in the UK today, and over 360,000 more are diagnosed every year. Right now, millions of people with cancer are counting on us for physical, financial and emotional support.”

Motor neurone disease is not as common or well-known as cancer, but it is life-shortening and cannot be cured. The Motor Neurone Disease Association provide information, equipment like communication aids, a support helpline, care centres, online forums, and financial support grants for those with MND and their families. Donations like those raised from events like Kevin’s golf day help keep these vital charities running so that they can provide cancer and motor neurone disease patients in the UK with invaluable care, and emotional and financial support when they need it most.

ServiceMaster Clean Bournemouth technician Jake Fox has won the award for Employee of the Year at this year’s ServiceMaster Live event.

ServiceMaster Live, which took place this May, is an annual gathering of franchisees from across the ServiceMaster UK brand family. This has been the first time the conference has been able to run since 2019 due to the limitations to public gatherings brought in to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Now finally together again, the event saw franchisees and their teams recognised for their hard work in overall customer service, sales, marketing efforts, resilience in the face of hardships, charity and community work and more, in an awards ceremony at the close of the day.

But awards were not solely reserved for franchisees. The ceremony also saw recognition to the staff members from across the network. This included an Employee of the Year award for ServiceMaster Clean Bournemouth’s very own superhero technician Jake Fox.

Jake joined the SMC Bournemouth team 3 years ago at the age of 19 as a contract cleaner. As a brand-new cleaner, Jake demonstrated very quickly a willingness to learn and develop his skills and a consciousness that has stood him in great stead for continuing excellence. The team say they recognised Jake’s potential very early on in his tenure as a contract cleaner, leading to recognition for his opportunity to progress by the branch’s Operations Manager. So, Jake was given the opportunity to qualify as a BDMA technician, which he passed with flying colours. As a result, Jake has now taken full control of the Restoration side of the business as a Senior Restore and Carpet Technician. He has worked throughout the pandemic, taking on even more responsibility including undertaking COVID Cleans and other emergency callouts.  

The SMC Bournemouth team, which is led by business owner Scott Burrows say that Jake’s quick progression and reputation within the community made him a no-brainer choice for Employee of the Year.

Jake is an asset to our company. His mature friendly nature and approach to customers have given us much repeat business. He is hardworking, knowledgeable, presentable, and always happy to help. This, of course, includes when Jake went above and beyond by going out in the middle of the night and arranging assistance to help an elderly customer who had taken a fall and accidentally called the SMC Bournemouth on-call number!

I feel very grateful to win the Employee of the Year award. The most gratifying part is that I was selected from my other employees from ServiceMaster Bournemouth.

I think simply to make a good ServiceMaster employee you have to care about the work that you are doing. I believe you can teach all of the practical sides of the business, but ultimately if you have no passion you will not be able to give an excellent level of service.

The director of ServiceMaster Clean Bournemouth completed the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

If you’ve been keeping up to date with our latest ServiceMaster Clean news, you’ll know that Michelle Walker of ServiceMaster Clean Bournemouth and her husband Gavin have been training to take part in the Macmillan Dorset Charity Bike Ride, which takes place annually on the first Sunday in July.

Around 325 people, including Michelle and Gavin, took part in the ride, choosing from a distance of either 38, 48, 63, or 100 miles through the Dorset countryside. The event is expected to have raised over £35K, with almost £17K already confirmed to have been raised from the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride Fundraising Group alone. Michelle and Gavin participated in the 48-mile ride, raising £345 for Macmillan, and smashing their £200 target. They are also both pleased to report that they sustained no injuries! Posting on her JustGiving page on Sunday, Michelle said, “Thank you [to] everyone who donated to such a worthy cause. We completed the ride in 4 hrs 42. Loved every minute… well almost. Thank you so much from [the] both of us!”

Join us in supporting the director of ServiceMaster Clean Bournemouth, Michelle Walker and her husband Gavin Walker, in taking part in a charity bike ride for Macmillan Cancer Support this weekend. 

Our resident cleaning heroes from ServiceMaster Clean Bournemouth are back out there doing good in the community this week. Director Michelle Walker and her husband Gavin Walker have been training their wheels for a charity bike ride in support of Macmillan Cancer Support this Sunday 3rd July.

The Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride was founded in 1989 by Peter Smith-Nicholls, who wanted to find an ongoing way to continue his fundraising efforts for Macmillan, which began with his cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in 1988. Since then, the bike ride has taken place on the first Sunday and is organised by a community of volunteers from the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride Fundraising Group. This year, the group alone has already raised over £7000 from a source of over 250 doners and multiple sponsored riders, each with fundraisers of their own – and many like Michelle and Gavin who will be contributing through JustGiving pages.

On Sunday, participants, including Michelle and Gavin, will begin their ride between the hours of 8:00-9:30 AM from Corfe Mullen and are given a choice of four different routes of differing lengths. Riders can cycle anywhere from 38, 48, 63, to 100 miles through the countryside to help the fundraiser reach its goal of raising £2 million.

The money raised by the ride is vital, as it ensures that Macmillan services, which provide essential care to cancer patients in the area can continue to run. Fundraisers like this are the lifeblood of organisations like Macmillan, who without them, wouldn’t be able to afford to keep operating.

“Macmillan services are urgently needed now more than ever but they simply can’t continue them without your help. Please donate today to help make sure Macmillan can keep delivering this critical support. Macmillan nurses, doctors and other health professionals up and down the country are there to continue to support people living with and beyond cancer,” says the Fundraising Group.

Michelle and Gavin will be taking part in the 48-mile challenge and have been training intensely for the endeavour, and have already exceeded their fundraising goal of £200!

“Macmillan gives people with cancer everything they’ve got,” she says.

“I personally have 4 immediate family members that have been struck with this awful disease and recently a close family friend, so I am sure as your reading this, you can perhaps relate to my experience with people close to you,’ she adds.

“I can’t save the world through this bike ride alone, but I can try and raise an amount of money that may just may, contribute towards the research to cure people. In memory of Mum and Dad… For all others close by or in my memory, you are not forgotten. [A] 48 Mile Cycle ride is a long, long way, it’s a challenge…one I can’t wait to take.”

Everything you need to know about re-tufting your carpet with ServiceMaster Clean.

What is re-tufting?

Tufting of a rug or carpet simply refers to the nature of its textile weaving, wherein several short pieces of thread or yarn are inserted into a base and held closely together. Therefore, re-tufting is the process of repairing damage to the original tufting of a rug or carpet.

When is re-tufting needed?

Re-tufting is a highly effective carpet treatment that can be carried out in many different scenarios. These include surface burns, stains, and damage from carpet-damaging insects like carpet moths. In the event of such damage, our carpet care experts will be able to diagnose the severity of the burn or marks and will treat the carpet accordingly. This assessment is crucial as the severity of the damage will affect the ability to carry out re-tufting. As a rule of thumb, re-tufting works best on burns or damages of up to approximately 2 inches (or 50mm).

Not all burns are able to be re-tufted. Because re-tufting requires attaching fibres to existing carpet, re-tufting is not an option if the burn has gone deep into the pile. In these cases, we will carry out a different form of treatment like using a bonded insert. This is essentially the equivalent of a skin graft for your carpet. What we do is cut out and remove the damaged area of carpet and replace it with a fresh piece.

How does re-tufting work?

When re-tufting is possible, we remove the damaged tufts to prepare the area to receive new tufts from either spare carpet or from the edge of the carpet where it is tucked behind the grippers. This means that the new tufts are the same batch and age as the original damaged tufts. We then install the new tufts either by re-tufting or re-weaving as appropriate.

How to identify and treat the spread of carpet moths.

You may have never have heard of them or even seen them, but if you’ve ever moved an item of furniture and noticed tiny patches where the carpet is missing – you’ve probably got unwelcome visitors in the form of the nasty carpet moth.

Identifying Carpet Moths

The carpet moth, also known as the case-bearing moth, pupae or “grub”, looks similar to a small grain of white/grey rice with a black dot at one end.

Carpet moths prefer environments with places with little airflow and no light or human disturbance. As a result, they are mainly, but not exclusively, found around the edges of rooms, in corners or under permanently placed furniture. However, unlike other common swarms, carpet mothsdo not like damp, dirty homes. Unfortunately, this means that the cleaner your home is, the more likely you are to fall prey to an infestation.

Main dangers

Carpet moths can eat many times their body weight in just 24 hours and can easily chomp their way through wool, silk or cotton. Meaning they can cause a lot of damage in a very short space of time. They take root quickly, multiplying rapidly by flying into a room and laying their eggs around the edges or under furniture, upholstery and rugs. They do this by laying the eggs actually inside the carpet. The eggs themselves have developed to camouflage with the carpet fibres, meaning they can stay undetected to the untrained eye.

The female carpet moth lays hundreds of eggs in her short lifetime, attaching them to the carpet with a strong self-generated adhesive. Once laid, the egg will hatch in 4-10 days. Following this, the new larvae will eat the carpet creating anything from small holes in the carpet to larger metre wide patches. And, when the conditions are just right, the larvae will become a cocoon. 8-10 days later, and they become a full-blown carpet moth.

Whilst the moth can eat your carpet, their main aim is breeding. It is the larvae that do the damage to your carpet, gorging itself as it heads towards metamorphosis. Sometimes the larvae will absorb the dyes from your carpet, helping it to become even less visible. This is bad for your home as several larvae can cause significant damage, ranging from a small hole to large patches in the carpet. This can sometimes be up to the size of the entire base of a wardrobe or armchair!

All of this means that time is of the utmost importance when dealing with carpet moths. But what can you do to get rid of these pests, and what about the carpets and rugs they’ve eaten through?

Preventative Measures

Regular vacuuming and cleaning of skirting boards will help eliminate the spread of carpet moths, as will moving sofas, rugs and chairs. There are also commercial treatments that you can buy and administer yourself for getting rid of moths. As a great organic deterrent, you could try using lavender pouches or cedar balls placed under heavy units and behind TVs.

You should also be aware that baskets of logs and piles of paper and books on the floor are open invitations to carpet moth. Ensure the basket is moved and vacuumed under regularly, and place papers and books in a plastic box with a lid.
