Eight top tips for preparing for commercial carpet cleaning on your premises.

All carpets need regular cleaning to maintain hygiene, enhance the appearance and prolong the carpet’s life.

Scheduling frequent cleaning is essential in a commercial environment, where footfall is likely high.

There are several key factors to consider when planning commercial carpet cleaning to ensure a successful and efficient process.

In this blog post, ServiceMaster Clean Devon gives eight top tips to help you with your planning.

  1. Evaluate your carpet cleaning needs

Assess the condition of your carpets and determine the level of cleaning required.

Consider factors such as the size of the area, traffic levels and any specific stains or areas of concern.

  1. Set a schedule

Plan the carpet cleaning around your business operations to minimise disruption.

Determine the best time for cleaning, such as after working hours, on weekends or during a quieter period.

Communicate the schedule with your staff and ensure they know of temporary closures or restricted access to certain areas.

  1. Research and select a reputable cleaning company

Look for a professional cleaning company that specialises in commercial carpet cleaning.

Read reviews, check references and compare quotes to find the most suitable option.

Ensure the company has experience in handling large-scale commercial projects.

  1. Communicate your expectations

Agree on your expectations and specific requirements with the cleaning company.

Discuss areas of concern, any particular stains or spots that need attention and any unique aspects of your carpets.

A full brief will help them plan their approach and allocate the necessary resources.

  1. Prepare the area

Clear the area of any furniture, equipment or obstacles that might hinder the cleaning process.

A clear space will ensure the cleaning crew can access all areas efficiently.

  1. Budget for regular maintenance

Commercial carpets typically require regular maintenance to keep them in good condition.

Consider scheduling periodic cleanings throughout the year to maintain cleanliness and extend the life of the carpets.

Discuss this with the cleaning company to establish a long-term maintenance plan.

  1. Address safety and security concerns

If your business deals with sensitive information or valuable assets, ensure the cleaning company has appropriate security measures.

You may need to provide access control or supervision during the cleaning process to protect your business interests.

  1. Follow-up maintenance

After the cleaning is complete, establish a routine for ongoing maintenance.

Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning will help maintain the cleanliness of your carpets between professional cleanings.

What’s involved in our property clearance and clean service?

Preparing a void property ready for the next occupant can sometimes require more than a straightforward cleaning.

If a previous resident has left unwanted contents and potential health hazards, it’ll need a specialist approach.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we have the expertise to safely clear and clean your premises, ready for the specialist trades to undertake repairs and redecoration or for your new tenant to move in.

In this blog post, ServiceMaster Clean Devon walks us through their property clearance and cleaning process so you know what to expect when you book with the experts.

What we do

We follow a three-step process to clear and clean a void property.

Since we handle everything, you won’t need to deal with separate organisations ensuring a quick and seamless service.

Out three-step process to void property cleaning

  1. Making it safe

First, we remove biohazards, sharps and bodily fluids from the property.

Each team member has the appropriate protection equipment and is trained to handle these high-risk materials and manage their safe removal.

  1. Clearing rubbish

As soon as the property is clear of hazardous materials, we remove and dispose of any other unwanted contents.

As well as general rubbish, we can take away items requiring specialist disposal, such as fridges and freezers.

  1. Deep cleaning

With all waste cleared, we move on to the deep clean and decontamination.

This final stage ensures that the property is clean and hygienic.

If necessary, we can thoroughly disinfect the property by fogging or Ozone treatment, where very fine droplets of disinfectant are sprayed throughout to remove unwanted odour and kill mould and microorganisms.

We supply reports on our findings, along with before and after photographs and can also provide method statements, risk assessments and COSHH sheets.

As soon as we have cleared and cleaned down the property, you can bring in your tradespeople to prepare the property for the next occupant.

Your Amtico floors are an investment and we’re Approved Amtico Aftercare Specialists, so you can trust us to look after them for you.

Trained by Amtico on how to restore and dress Amtico flooring, at ServiceMaster Clean, we offer specialist advice on the types of coating and treatments available to keep floors looking pristine.

Our national network of trained specialists now boasts over 50 technicians who have all been thoroughly trained in how to care for your Amtico flooring after installation.

Even in the most careful of homes, accidental damage such as scratches, stains and scrapes can occur when it comes to hard flooring. Fortunately, they’re all things that we at ServiceMaster Clean, like to get our teeth into.

Here are some useful tips for looking after your Amtico flooring:

Scratching

Use fibre matting to remove excess grit, dirt and moisture. Sweep your floor more often. Use Amtico International Floor Dressing for that extra protection.

Sticky Floor

If greasy, remove solids with absorbent paper then use Amtico International Floor Cleaner (following the instructions on the bottle). If there are dull residues, mop the floor again and avoid exceeding the recommended concentrations of the product. Avoid using ‘other’ cleaning products, for example washing up liquid.

Floor Indentation

Protect your floor under heavy furniture with wide-bearing cups. For chairs and frequently moved furniture, use easy swivelling wide wheel casters or felt pads. The subfloor beneath the tiles may be permanently indented if load-bearing devices are not used.

Want to know what you can do to mark the coronation of King Charles III?

With the coronation of King Charles III just around the corner, many are wondering how they can celebrate.

And can you blame them? It’s been a while since there was last a coronation in the UK, so the celebration activities aren’t exactly a force of habit.

Rather than letting the day slip by unmarked, here is a list of ways you and your family can celebrate the coronation this weekend.

Fun for the kids

Royal Arts & Crafts

There are lots of activities that the kids can get involved in this weekend.

Particularly those involving arts in crafts.

For some inspiration, try making:

  • Crowns using strips of paper
  • Paper flags using rectangles of paper and lolly sticks.

For tips and alternative methods, check out three ways to make a homemade flag.

For more inspiration, including card carriages and homemade bunting, check out this article from Twinkl on 10 Regal Coronation Crafts.

Writing letters and cards to Buckingham Palace

The King also takes a great interest in correspondence with his subjects. Writing letters and cards to send to Buckingham Palace are a great way to celebrate the occasion.

For guidance on the correct ways to format your correspondence, please visit www.royal.uk/contact

Fun for everyone

For some activities that people of all ages can participate in, look no further than

Creating a time capsule

Take objects and souvenirs that remind you of 2023 and the royal weekend (maybe even some of your crafts) and bury them in the garden so that, in years to come, you can look back on this time with fondness and nostalgia.

This could include a family photo, money, letters, newspapers and stamps.

Place it all in a secure container and bury it to be dug up in future.

For a step-by-step Time Capsule building (and burying) guide, check out this article from Millets.

Hosting a garden party

To celebrate a royal occasion, there is nothing better than a street or garden party.

While the date to register a road closure to host your street party has passed, there may still be one in your area.

Failing that, a good old-fashioned garden party never goes amiss.

Just don’t forget the bunting, finger sandwiches and scones!

For more activity inspiration and to find events near you this weekend and beyond, check out this coronation event map and locator from the UK Government.

How ServiceMaster Clean helps keep your mobile home looking its best.

Whether you’re going on a long trip or staying put, the condition of your mobile home or caravan is vitally important.

No one wants to spend a long trip or holiday avoiding sitting on a dirty stain on the upholstery.

And with kids running around, it can be near impossible to avoid trekking in mud and other outdoor messes.

You don’t have to settle for less than the best for your home on the road.

With ServiceMaster Clean, you can remove any lingering mess from your carpet and upholstery without lifting a finger.

Why ServiceMaster Clean?

Products and equipment

Our technicians are kitted-out with the latest and greatest cleaning tools to remove all manner of stains accrued over your holidays.

Our mobile home repair services

Smells, dirt and marks

We understand that static and touring caravans can be left uninhabited for periods, leading to a build-up of smells and dirt.

Which, in turn, can leave unsightly marks inside your caravan.

Whether you keep your caravan at home, in storage or on a seasonal site, ServiceMaster Clean can be on hand to get things cleaned up and smelling fresh.

Perfect for tight spaces and steps

Sometimes, the issue of a stain or mark is exacerbated by its location in an awkward and hard-to-reach area.

Rather than get yourself in a sweat and huff by literally backing yourself into a corner, call on the experts.

Our top-of-the-range equipment also makes short work of tight spaces and caravan steps.

Residue

Our specialist equipment and expertise don’t just clear away dirt.

It also rids your carpet of shampoo residue and water, so they stay cleaner for longer.

Unlike professional carpet cleaning, most store-bought or rented carpet cleaning equipment leaves carpets wet with the detergent residue, causing a horrible sticky feel.

Carpet Cleaning

No matter your situation and price, we have a carpet cleaning system that can help.

Including:

  • Stain Removal
  • Clean to Blend
  • Full Carpet Clean
  • Soil Resistant Finishes
  • Carpet Protection

And if your carpet has sustained substantial damage, we can also undertake several repair services like micro-shearing and re-tufting.

Hard floor and upholstery services

Does your caravan or mobile home have hard floors? We clean these too!

Whether vinyl, laminate, LVT or even Amitco flooring, ServiceMaster Clean has developed regular hard floor cleaning and care systems to ensure the aesthetic appearance of your hard floor is the same as it was on the day it was installed.

With a visit from ServiceMaster Clean, you can forget worrying about the daily wear and tear that may scratch and mark your hard floors.

Our hard floor finishes look great and protect your floor from further damage.

Upholstery

The danger with cleaning most upholstery is not having the right tools for your material.

ServiceMaster Clean can also eliminate the stress of cleaning the upholstery and curtains in your caravan or mobile home.

From initial vacuuming to choosing the wet or dry-cleaning system most appropriate for your soft furnishings, we can clean any immediate stains, marks or residue and protect your upholstery from any future bother.

Curtains

And with our specialist tools, you don’t go through the hassle of removing your curtains.

During a visit from ServiceMaster Clean, we start by thoroughly vacuuming the curtains paying attention to the head linings where dust and insects gather.

Then we clean the curtain back and front by hand, closely inspecting as we do so.

We’ll even clean your pelmets, leaving your curtains revitalised and smelling fresh!

How ServiceMaster Clean keeps your communal areas spotless.

The communal area of a building is the first place a visitor sees, so it should be clean, welcoming and hazard-free.

However, these spaces are usually heavy-traffic areas, so maintaining high cleanliness levels can be challenging.

At ServiceMaster Clean Devon, we provide a communal cleaning service to meet this challenge and ensure you fulfil your health and safety responsibilities as a landlord.

How we support you

We deliver cleaning for managing agents, housing associations and landlords.

We maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the communal spaces in their residential and commercial buildings.

How ServiceMaster Clean cleans your communal areas

The exact specification of our communal area cleaning depends on the nature of the building and its use.

However, typically this includes dusting surfaces, wiping high-touch surfaces with antibacterial products and vacuuming carpets and hard floors.

Other tasks we can undertake during regular or one-off cleans include spot-cleaning walls, washing windows (internal and external), deep-cleaning flooring and cleaning bin stores.

Our guarantee

Overall our role is to ensure that the shared spaces in your building are presentable and clean, and we can do whatever cleaning tasks are necessary to achieve that.

Every site has unique communal cleaning requirements, so we agree on a specific cleaning regime with each customer.

This cleaning specification also includes the frequency and the timing of each clean.

Our cleaning services are delivered by fully trained, uniformed, insured staff providing peace of mind for you and the users of your building.

Behind the scenes at ServiceMaster Clean Devon: We look at how to encourage staff success.

When cleaning, it’s vital to have the right tools.

And in business, the same can be said of the staff. Having the right people in place can make or break your business.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we pride ourselves on the service we deliver and the teams up and down the country who provide it.

As our service quality rests on our team of technicians, we have a comprehensive training programme to ensure they deliver the professional and expert service you expect from us.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we nurture our staff and have high staff retention levels to reflect this – a rarity in the cleaning sector.

Not only does this help us grow local talent and careers in our communities, but it also ensures that you receive top-quality service from experienced professionals.

In this behind-the-scenes look, ServiceMaster Clean Devon shares how they train their staff for the best results and keep their team up to date.

Initial Training

Our training begins on day one.

All new employees experience a rigorous induction programme to familiarise them with the ServiceMaster Clean brand, procedures and health & safety requirements.

As part of induction, we also conduct in-house equipment operation training.

This ensures our technicians know our specific tools and how to use them correctly.

After this process, our technicians are fully equipped to undertake customer cleaning jobs to our exacting standards.

Specialist Training

For specialist cleaning work, such as external soft wash cleaning or flood recovery work undertaken by our ServiceMaster Restore technicians, like in Devon, technicians attend external and accredited training courses.

For example, one of their flood recovery technicians is trained and accredited by the British Damage Management Association (BDMA).

Regular Training

ServiceMaster Clean Devon also holds weekly toolbox briefings.

All technicians attend these to keep them up to date with health and safety.

They also use these sessions to brief on upcoming jobs and to ensure all staff are aware of special considerations.

Fortnightly team meetings also keep the team abreast of operational and business updates.

As well as providing an opportunity to share best practices.

Finally, ServiceMaster Clean Devon undertakes an annual staff appraisal process.

This ensures a yearly review of training needs and a chance for our technicians to explore areas they’d like to up-skill.

As a result, every team member knows and deploys the correct and safe use of cleaning equipment and products.

Your commercial exterior cleaning questions: answered.

Regular external cleaning can help maintain your property, improve its appearance and reduce walkway slip hazards.

But cleaning the exterior of your property can come with a host of unknowns.

As experienced providers of external cleaning services to businesses across Devon, the experts at ServiceMaster Clean Devon told us some of the frequently asked questions they hear about exterior cleaning.

  1. What types of surfaces can be cleaned with a pressure washer?

Pressure washers are an effective way to deep clean external surfaces where algae, mould and mildew might build up.

The following exterior areas will benefit from cleaning with a pressure washer:

  • Decking and patio areas
  • Driveways and walkways
  • Roofing and siding
  • Concrete and brick

However, some outdoor surfaces require more care and aren’t suitable for cleaning with a pressure washer. These include:

  • Asphalt shingles
  • Stained wood
  • Lead paint
  • Windows
  • Old mortar
  • Gutters
  1. How often should I have my property pressure washed?

For the majority of surfaces, an annual power washing should suffice.

However, high-traffic areas such as walkways, exterior entrances and car parks might need cleaning more frequently.

This will limit the build-up of dirt and vegetation, which could create a hazard.

  1. Can pressure washing damage my property?

Pressure washers use extremely high-pressure jet streams.

These can cause irreversible damage if incorrectly used or used on unsuitable surfaces.

Therefore, utilising a trained and experienced team is essential when pressure washing your property.

  1. What is the best way to clean gutters?

A gutter vacuum is the best way to clean your gutters.

It sucks up all the debris in the gutter without leaving any mess.

It is also much more effective than other techniques, like cleaning by hand.

  1. When is the best time to clean gutters?

The best time to clean your gutters is after autumn when gutters have become clogged up with falling leaves.

Or at the beginning of spring, when seedlings may take root.

  1. How often should I have my gutters cleaned?

Regular gutter clearing will stop gutters from becoming blocked and causing water damage.

Most properties require an annual gutter clearance, but those with nearby trees should have a twice-yearly clean.

Any gutters overflowing or allowing water ingress into your property will require immediate cleaning.

  1. Why use purified water for window cleaning?

Using purified water to clean windows leaves a completely crystal-clear finish.

Unlike tap water, which can leave impurities on the glass as the water dries.

Instead, purified water evaporates, leaving a clean, spot and streak-free surface.

  1. How often should I clean my windows?

The frequency of your window cleaning will depend on the nature of your business and its location.

For example, the windows of an office building on a busy road will dirty quicker than one on an out-of-town business park.

Generally speaking, properties that have high footfall (a shop or restaurant, for example) or provide healthcare (such as a hospital) will probably need window cleaning once or twice a month.

On the other hand, an office building will probably only need a six-monthly window cleaning.

In need of professional exterior cleaning services?

For external property cleaning, you can’t beat a professional touch.

For expert exterior and commercial carpet and upholstery cleaning services, look no further than ServiceMaster Clean.

The health risks of a dirty carpet.

It’s well-known that a clean environment is better for your health.

A tidy home is better for your mental health. And clean, germ-free space benefits your physical health.

But what if harm was hiding in plain sight?

Most homes have carpets. And most of them see heavy traffic.

But not just from people. What if we told you that your carpets were a hotbed of germs, microbes and bacteria?

At ServiceMaster Clean, we have over 60 years of experience as leading experts in carpet cleaning, so we know the dangers of a dirty carpet.

Here are some of the ways a dirty carpet is damaging your health.

  1. Allergic Reactions

When you think of having an allergic reaction, you probably don’t think “Well, that’ll be the carpet.”

But often, that is where you should be looking for the cause of your current bout of allergies.

Airborne allergens are subject to gravity and get brought down to us whether we like it or not.

And where do they end up? On the floor.

Meaning your carpets can house microscopic irritants from inside and outside your home.

All of which can cause an allergic reaction.

These include:

  • Animal dander
  • Pollen
  • Microscopic insect parts
  • Dust and dust mites
  • Mould

Some of these like animal dander and dust can come from inside, but pollen and other pollutants can also become tracked in on the soles of shoes and waft through open windows.

If you’re allergic or sensitive to any of these substances or suffer from allergy-induced asthma, contact dermatitis, or allergic rhinitis, you may experience allergy symptoms.

Symptoms include:

  • Itchy, skin, eyes, and nose
  • Sneezing
  • Running nose and eyes
  • A scratchy throat
  • Hives
  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Trouble breathing / Shortness of breath
  • Pressure in your chest

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the irritants building up in your carpet mean symptoms can break out immediately after vacuuming.

  1. Respiratory Issues

As these irritants like mould and dust trapped in your carpet spread the air through, the movement of pollutants may also lead to respiratory issues.

Similar to allergens, these can include coughing or difficulty breathing.

However, while allergens are likely to affect those who already suffer, these may affect everyone.

Although, those with asthma are still likely to feel these symptoms more acutely, as they’re more vulnerable to airborne toxins.

Pets and children are also more likely to be affected, as they spend more time on the floor and touching their mouths.

  1. Health risks from pet germs

Speaking of pets: they make having clean carpets even more crucial.

Not only can pet waste carry bacteria, but it can also create smells like ammonia that can cause nose and lung irritation.

This is particularly dangerous for small children who, as we already know, are frequently low down and in contact with carpets.

Furthermore, the dampness from pet urine increases the risk of mould growth.

We know that this can cause further allergic reactions and respiratory issues, immediately treating areas of carpet that are affected by pet waste is vital.

Given that traction from the outdoors means pathogens and pollutants can be brought into the home, cats and dogs are big spreaders of diseases and germs, and insects like ticks and fleas.

  1. Gut Health

The mould from wetness on the carpet can also harm your digestive system.

According to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, mould can go unseen and even host salmonella.

Thus, a dirty carpet can lead to gut issues, furthered by the presence of mycotoxins that cause severe stomach irritation and infection.

  1. Weakening your Immune System

Our bodies do a lot for us.

This includes an ongoing battle to keep us fighting fit and healthy.

If you live in an unclean environment, your body ends up working overtime to fight bacteria and make sure you don’t succumb to illness.

When you’ve been hard at work all day, the last thing you want to do when you get home is even more work.

Your immune system is the same.

If you don’t give your body a chance to rest, it’ll get tired.

With carpets inhabited by harmful toxins, this is bound to happen.

This means you’re less able to fight off infection and stay healthy.

  1. Skin Irritation

A dirty carpet can also contribute to skin irritations by triggering common conditions like athlete’s foot and eczema and can cause rashes and itchy skin.

In particular, these are often due to the dust particles in the carpet.

For example, dust mites are small and hard to eliminate through regular cleaning alone.

If you’re struggling with itchy skin, even when cleaning your carpet often, it might be caused by dust mites.

To be rid of dust mites, Prevention.com recommends using a humidifier and regularly professionally cleaning your carpets to protect sensitive skin – particularly if you have a pre-existing condition.

The tools ServiceMaster Clean use for expert carpet cleaning.

We know you don’t want to shell out money buying products and lose time cleaning your carpets.

There are tools out there that can be used to clean carpets that are available to the general public, but most pale in comparison to professional equipment and service.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we do the cleaning for you using the best tools, unavailable to the general public.

Here’s a breakdown of what we use to get the best possible standard of cleaning for your carpets and how they work, so you know what to expect from a ServiceMaster clean.

Pump Spray

We use this to concentrate and apply the exclusive, industrial-strength products used to clean your carpets.

We place the cleaning product within the machine and pump the pressure up. Think of it almost like a pressure cooker.

We then spray the carpet with the product and let it sit before we utilise the extractor.

For smaller or harder-to-reach areas, we utilise a hand sprayer which performs the above but is easier to use on smaller surfaces.

 Extractor machine

Once the product has been applied, we use the extractor to remove the product and clean the carpet.

It has two water tankers attached to a long metal pole (or wand) via pipes.

The head of the wand is what we put onto the carpet (or whatever we are cleaning) to do the bulk of the cleaning.

First, clean, warm water is poured into one tank (or we put in cold water and heat it – a bit like a giant kettle).

Then there is a separate tank to collect the dirty water after the cleaning.

Then we run the wand over the carpet, which pushes clean water into the carpet and sucks out the dirty water.

We also have a smaller version of the extractor called a Spotter that is easier to manoeuvre and is used for smaller or fiddlier items like stair carpets and sofas.

The Roto Machine

This is a large machine with pads at the bottom which we use on hard floors like Amtico, tiles, and stone, but that we sometimes use on some carpets and works similarly to the extractor.

Water is placed into a tank while any product is sprayed onto the floor.

The machine then moves over the floor to clean it. We can also use this machine to strip products off the floor.

We do this by changing the pads on the bottom of the machine – some are more abrasive than others. Think of it like sandpaper coming in different grits.

Tampico brush

Used for spot cleaning and removing stains, visually, the Tampico brush looks like a scrubbing brush… but it isn’t!

The bristles are designed to snap if too much pressure is applied to the item we are cleaning.

While this seems like a potentially odd design choice, it is done to make causing damage to your carpet or rug very difficult.

This brush is one of the more labour-intensive tools in our arsenal, as it is used for cleaning stubborn areas by hand.

Agitator

The Agitator is a piece of equipment we use in deep cleaning carpets that require a more comprehensive cleaning service.

This is a tool that we use after we have applied a product.

It pushes the cleaning product into the pile of the carpet/rug to perform a deep clean.

We also use this for lifting the pile. Therefore, making it easier for us to carry out a deep clean.

ServiceMaster Clean breaks down the tools that get your carpets shining like new.

When most people think of a dirty carpet, they think of an accidental spillage or an eyesore.

And work!

Let’s face it, cleaning your carpets is a positive habit to get into.

Not just from an upkeep standpoint. A dirty carpet can cause numerous unforeseen health risks like respiratory problems and a weakened immune system.

But how often do most of us properly clean our carpets? Not very!

For many, this is because it takes extra labour clearing things off of it, then ensuring you have a carpet cleaning agent and waiting for it to take effect.

And when you have a stain, this just isn’t effective, as you can’t react quickly enough to mitigate long-term damage.

But what if we told you there was another way?

At ServiceMaster Clean UK, we have over 60 years of expertise as an industry leader in carpet cleaning.

So, we know the best tools for the job.

Join us as we dive into what carpet cleaning tools are best to have on hand to get the job done right.

  1. A vacuum with a HEPA Filter

A vacuum cleaner is one of the most essential carpet cleaning tools.

However, the type and effectiveness of vacuums can vary wildly.

Due to the health risks of a dirty carpet, ensure your vacuum has a HEPA filter system.

HEPA (which stands for high-efficiency particulate air) is a filter classification.

To qualify as a HEPA filter, systems must remove no less than 99.97% of particulates like dust, pollen, and pet hair from the air.

So, buy a machine that can extract fine dust particles and improve air quality.

For carpet cleaning, it’s also worth investing in a vacuum with an adjustable beater bar to ensure it can be used on the different carpet types on your property.

  1. Stain remover

Stain removers are detergents that help remove stains from your carpet by dissolving the stain from the textile fibres.

Products vary in size, price, and effectiveness, so be discerning in what you buy.

Having a trusted stain remover can be a lifesaver when a spillage occurs as you can ensure it doesn’t have time to set in.

Service Spotlight: Emergency flood clean-up

The impact of flooding, whether due to a burst pipe or a weather event, can be catastrophic. Floodwater can cause extensive property damage and create a possible health hazard from contaminated water, so clearing up after a flood requires expert remedial care.

Emergency flood clean-up service

We provide an emergency flood clean-up service to manage this stressful event. Our quick response will mitigate potential damage, remove any health risks and restore the building to working order as soon as possible.

Upon arrival onsite, our flood recovery team will assess any risks before beginning the recovery process. Safety is paramount, so our team are highly trained to respond to this type of emergency.

Our powerful machinery and specialist products will simultaneously extract water and sanitise the area, minimising any health risks from contaminated water. Once the floodwater has been removed, we install drying equipment to prevent the potential of further damage from moisture in the atmosphere.

Following this initial containment process, we provide a summary report, including photos and key points, to the client. The property is now ready for the next stage – the specialist in-depth drying process.

Our early response provides reassurance that a flooded property is safe and ensures it can be back in use in the shortest timescale.

Over-wetting is a nightmare for carpet owners everywhere. But what is it? And why is it so harmful?

Over-wetting your carpet is a surprisingly common concern and problem we tackle at ServiceMaster Clean.

Particularly following an accident or previously botched carpet cleaning job.

Never heard of it? Now worried you should be concerned? Don’t fret.

With over 60 years as leading experts in carpet cleaning, we know a thing or two about carpets and the issues that plague them.

That’s why we’re here to walk you through the common causes, symptoms and solutions for over-wetting.

Over-wetting explained

Essentially, over-wetting does what it says on the tin. It is the process of making the carpet too wet.

“Is this a massive issue?” you scream.

The truth is that problems with over-wetting are more than just the carpet taking longer to dry. The excess moisture left in the carpet can cause more unpleasant and long-lasting concerns.

What are the issues caused by over-wetting?

The problems caused by over-wetting are broad and vary from case to case. But there are some common issues.

The main predicaments we see when dealing with over-wetting are as follows.

Browning

Browning on your carpet occurs when carpets don’t dry sufficiently quickly enough. Wool is particularly guilty of this.

This means the carpet fibres are left with unpleasant stain-like brown marks.

We often encounter people who mistakenly think that the new brown stains on their carpets have sprung up out of the blue.

An awful lot of the time, this turns out to be browning.

Often, this results from a poor cleaning job or a store-bought cleaning machine that isn’t up to the task.

The problem with these machines is that they are often inadequate. And in trying to avoid using a professional cleaner, you still need specialist treatment to have any chance of removing the marks they leave.

With browning on the carpet, the likelihood of being able to fix the issue is dependent on what is causing the marks.

But getting a professional opinion will let you know if your carpet can be salvaged.

The smell!

One of the most common problems caused by over-wetting is a lingering bad smell.

After your carpet has been cleaned – whether by you or a professional – most of the moisture should have been removed.

This should leave you with a slightly damp carpet. Any remaining moisture should disappear over the next few hours.

If your carpets fail to dry within this time, the multiplying bacteria or mould may leave a very unpleasant odour. This is increasingly prevalent if water has seeped into the underlay.

To prevent this as much as possible, ensure the room has sufficient airflow where sensible for you to do so.

Failing this, you may need to replace your carpet.

However, when faced with a smelly carpet, depending on its source, you may be able to contact a restoration technician to help.

Thankfully our sister company, ServiceMaster Restore, offers bespoke and on-call restoration services in homes across the UK.

Find your nearest ServiceMaster Restore business to learn more.

Carpet Shrinkage

Possibly the most common issue encountered from over-wetting a carpet is shrinkage.

This comes from excessive water shrinking the carpet from the corners.

In some cases, shrunk carpets can be re-stretched, but often the damage is irreparable.

That’s why it’s vital to understand your carpet and use the right tools when cleaning it.

When applying moisture to your carpet, you must ensure that a powerful enough vacuum is used to get all the excesses and avoid damage.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we have the tools and expertise to get the job done right the first time.

When it comes to carpet cleaning, what difference does a professional touch make?

Faced with a problem, your instinct is probably to deal with it yourself. And in the age of YouTube and social media, it’s never been easier to find out the skills required to perform maintenance jobs.

We know this is the same for cleaning your upholstery or repairing a damaged carpet. But is taking a stab at DIY solutions the best way to fix these issues?

The problem with DIY carpet and upholstery repair

The main problem with any DIY repair is that it’s probably your first attempt at this type of job. Therefore, you’re more likely to face questions than solutions:

Have you fitted the pipes correctly to the machine you’re trying to use? Can you safely prevent spillages or accidents?

The reality is that, on your own, you’re more likely to get things wrong or get overwhelmed with the problem at hand. Sometimes, you could even make things worse.

For example, there is more chance of you shrinking or over-wetting your carpet when carrying out carpet repair stain removal by yourself.

Glitter spilt everywhere? Not to worry, here’s how to deal with it.

Christmas time or not, children and adults alike love working with glitter. It’s just plain fun and can add excitement to holiday crafts, artwork and even holiday homework!

The problem with glitter, however, is that one wag of a dog’s tail or breeze from an oscillating fan can send it everywhere, making it look like a troupe of fairies exploded in your home.

To top it all off, glitter is notoriously difficult to remove.

But don’t let fear of cleanup keep you from adding a little sparkle to your daily life. Instead, learn this trick to help you remove glitter from various surfaces – courtesy of ServiceMaster Clean.

How to Remove Glitter with… a Lint Roller?!

Most of us know that lint rollers work well for getting rid of hair like pet shedding or flyaway hairs. They work great on glitter, too, even on carpets!

Simply run the roller over glitter-bombed areas, peeling off layers of the adhesive paper as needed.

Have a mess, but no lint roller handy? You can use duct tape or masking tape to get rid of glitter, too.

Wrap the tape around your hand, sticky side out, and dab up the offending pieces of shimmer in your home.

Vacuum

The roller should pick up a good deal of your sparkling mess, making it easier for you to follow up with the vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.

After you’ve used the lint roller to “sweep” the glitter in one pile, you can use the hoover to vacuum it up.

Note: Make sure the area you’ll be vacuuming isn’t wet or covered with glue before you get to work. And naturally, you’ll need to use a handheld model or a vacuum cleaner attachment for furniture or table tops.

Use a Damp Cloth

Once you’ve picked up the majority of glitter that’s been spilt with your lint roller or vacuum, you can use a microfiber cloth to deal with any straggling sparkles.

Lightly dampen the cloth and pat it on shimmery surfaces until all the glitter pieces have been removed. And don’t forget to clean your microfiber cloth after you’re finished getting rid of glitter. Otherwise, you could add some unintentional shine to your kitchen countertops.

Note: Before using a damp cloth on an upholstered sofa, you’ll need to check the cleaning instructions. Some fabric furniture can be ruined if you clean it with water.
