The UK celebrates Father’s Day this weekend, and to mark the occasion, we sat down with Chris Edmonds from ServiceMaster Clean West Suffolk to see what inheriting the family business from his father has taught him.


What was it like to build a business with your father?

“I grew up alongside the business as my parents built it, starting in the early 80’s with just a single garage and a Ford Cortina estate. Later, I worked for them during the school holidays and when [I was] back from University. By then, they had a few vehicles and premises of their own; when I moved back and worked full-time with my dad as we prepared for his retirement.”

“It was generally good fun. We get on well and are good mates. He likes a story and a dad joke, and I’ve heard them all a million times. Now and again, he’ll pull one out that he’s never told me but it’s rare!”

“There were times obviously when we had a difference of opinion. Working that closely with a parent or partner has its stresses but we never took it home after a day’s work. And when it came to the crunch he’d say, ‘While it’s my business we’ll do it my way, when it’s your business you can do it your way’ and you can’t say much fairer than that.”


What are your earliest memories of the business?

“Back in our first house in Bury St Edmunds (we still work for the lady who helped us buy it over forty years ago) Dad would sometimes bring rugs back to clean in our lounge. I’d help by spinning his carpet disk, so it’d lay flat for him to put the roto on. There was a knack to it. They did more bonnet cleaning back then not so much extraction cleaning as today.”

“They also sponsored my football team from under 9’s onwards. So, we’d all have a yellow kit with ServiceMaster on the front and go to away games in Dad’s big yellow van. It was quite iconic and I’m sure I was very proud.”

“Running your own business has its positives. You’re in control largely of what you do and when. But, of course, that comes with greater responsibility too. I was generally in customer services and then teaching – so people-based areas. That helps as being a sole trader I’m the voice on the phone, the guy who replies to the emails and the face that turns up on your doorstep.”

What core values has your father passed down to you?

“To take pride in your work and all you do. We’re not into making a fast buck. We try and do a great job at a fair price so that people come back, tell their families and friends, and then they book us in, and so it grows.”


What are some of the most rewarding moments you’ve experienced since taking over the business?

“We won the Customer Service Award before Dad retired but by then he was just doing a bit in the office, so I felt that was something I’d achieved. But every week there are little moments when customers walk in really chuffed as you’ve got a stain out of their carpet, they thought they’d have to replace or say ‘Wow, the sofa you’ve cleaned looks like new’; little things like that.


Is your father proud of how the business has grown since his retirement?

“Yes, I think he’s proud of the work we’re doing. I sometimes hear him on the phone to old customers and it’s nice to hear what he tells them about me. He’s not one for blowing smoke so I know he means it.”

Mud Cleaning Method #1: Washing Up Liquid

  1. Pick up all of the large mud clumps from the carpet. (We would advise using protective gloves throughout the cleaning process)
  2. Apply a mixture of baking powder and salt to the mud stain. Allow the mixture to sit for a couple of hours to soak up all of the moisture from the stain. Then, vacuum away the mixture
  3. Mix a tablespoon of washing up liquid with two mugs of warm water and saturate the stain with the solution., using a clean cloth
  4. Blot the excess liquid using a good absorbent paper towel
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the mud stain is removed
  6. Sponge the carpet with cold water and blot away, again with a paper towel
  7. Let it air dry.

Mud Cleaning Method #2: Vinegar

You won’t need as long for this method, in fact, probably only about 15 minutes.

  1. Add half a cup of vinegar, add about a tablespoon of washing up liquid and mix
  2. Using a brush, gently rub the solution onto the mud stain
  3. Rinse the area with cold water using either a clean cloth or sponge
  4. Repeat the process until the stain has gone
  5. Once the stain has been removed, dry the carpet with a clean towel.

Mud Cleaning Method #3: Shop brought stain remover

These homemade attempts may fail you and if they do just buy a commercial stain remover. They’re all usually quite simple to use, usually all you have to do is spray the product on the stained area and allow it to sit. You will find information about the amount of time the product needs to sit in order for it to work, on the care label.

After you’ve waited for the stain remover to sit for the specified amount of time, you then need to wipe the carpet clean (we would recommend using a sponge to rub the stained area).

The DIY Method for Removing Grease

Once you’ve removed any solids and blotted the grease and excess moisture from the stain, it’s time to start a treatment.

  • Sprinkle the stain with baking soda to absorb the last of the excess moisture (allow the baking soda to set for about 15 minutes)
  • Vacuum away the remainder of the baking soda.
  • For S code, use a dry-cleaning solvent to lift the stain (follow the manufacturing instructions on how to apply it)
  • If the care label has a W code, apply a homemade stain solution of one cup of water and two teaspoons of plain liquid dishwashing detergent designed to cut grease.
  • If S/W is the code that appears, use either of the techniques above.
  • When using a wet cleansing solution, gently blot the solution over the stain using a clean cloth.
  • Rinse the cloth out and repeat until the stain begins to lighten.
  • To avoid saturating the upholstery or the cushion underneath, blot with a dry, clean cloth after each application of the cleaning solution.

  1. Trim your stems at an angle

You might have heard this one if you got the flowers from a florist, as it’s a must for proper flower care: Trim the stems at an angle before you put them in water.

Why is this advised?

Your flowers drink through a part of their stems called the xylem, which carries water and nutrients from the root to the flower.

Once picked, the end of a flower dries out, so cutting the end of their stems before putting them in water allows them to absorb water and drink properly.

Cutting them at an angle is advised because it allows more surface area to drink from.

While cutting straight is harmless, cutting at a 45-degree angle means the entire stem’s surface area is always in contact with the water and can absorb more helpful nutrients to live longer.


  1. Remove foliage under the water line

Any leaves and foliage and or leaves under the water line of your flowers should be removed.

This is because any foliage left under the water line will begin to rot, encouraging bacteria growth and damaging the plant.


  1. Add bleach and sugar solution

Add a little bleach to the flower water.

Add 1/4 teaspoon bleach per 1 litre of water.

Alternatively, you can add a solution of bleach and sugar.

Add three drops of bleach and one teaspoon of sugar in 1-quart (1 litre) water to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and prevent the water from growing cloudy.

Copper is a natural fungicide, so dropping a penny into the vase will also help kill off the harmful bacteria festering in the old water and try to kill off your lovely bouquet.

General Tips

Before we get too into Christmas crackers and sweetie wrappers, there are some rules of thumb to follow:

  • Put lids back on jars and bottles
  • Make sure any packaging is empty before binning
  • Keep items separate
  • Ensure items are clean and dry
  • Flatten cardboard

Different councils across the UK will have different approaches and guidelines regarding recycling.

Food waste

Now, this is a big one. What goes on your plate is a big part of any festive celebration. But, so is what goes in your bin.

When binning food waste, make sure you follow the aforementioned best practices.

You can recycle:

  • Glass bottles and jars – but not drinking glasses or Pyrex, as these have different melting points and are recycled differently.
  • Drinks cans and food tins
  • Milk cartons
  • Biscuit trays and tins
  • Crisp tubes (Pringles)

You can’t recycle:

  • Black plastic – the black pigment cannot be picked up by the laser technology used in the sorting process.
  • Metal tubes (tomato puree)
  • Cooking oil tins
  • Sweet wrappers
  • Crisp packets

Wrapping paper

For getting rid of wrapping paper, you may have heard of the scrunch test. Our tip here is: try it!

By scrunching wrapping paper into a ball, you can tell whether or not it can be recycled.

How does this work? Simple: if the paper stays in a ball, it is recyclable. However, when the paper is filled with too much glitter, foil, or sticky tape, it is non-recyclable.

When this happens, the paper will bounce back if you try to scrunch it, and it must go into general waste.

For eco-friendly wrapping:

  • Try to avoid wrapping paper that is dyed, laminated, or has glitter on it.
  • Choose eco-friendly paper, like 100% recycled paper, fabric, scarves, newspapers, maps, or old magazines.
  • Because sticky tape is not recyclable, try a specialist recyclable Washi or masking tape. Or try using things like string or ribbon instead.

Un-Recyclable items

As you may have gathered, you cannot organise materials by de-facto can and cannot be recycled.

Some items must not be recycled and need to be disposed of differently.

  • Nappies cannot be recycled and need to go into general waste
  • Not all plastics are recyclable. You cannot recycle plant pots, tubs, trays (think toothpaste), or rigid plastics like toys, Tupperware or CD/DVD cases

Some items can be recycled or disposed of economically, but not through your recycling collection.

  • Batteries thrown away alongside general waste/recycling can become punctured or crushed. This can cause them to explode and start fires. So, dispose of them safely by taking them to your local recycling plant or supermarket.
  • Fabrics and textiles cannot be placed in with other recycling and should be taken to a collection point, clothes bank, or charity shop to be gotten rid of.

With wine, especially red, it’s vital to blot it immediately with a white microfibre cloth until all the liquid has been absorbed to stop it from spreading.

Blotting is essential instead of wiping, as wiping may spread the stain further.

Once the liquid is absorbed, spray Spot Hero on a cloth to remove the remaining stain.


Hot chocolate and eggnog

These delicious holiday beverages can leave behind some ugly stains.

If the stain persists, use Spot Hero or mix white vinegar (one cup) and warm water (two cups) and gently work through the stain, then rinse again with warm water and blot the remaining moisture with a dry microfibre cloth.


Butter and grease

The grease in butter can set in quickly, making it a tricky but not impossible stain.

Start by removing the excess butter from the area, then dip a corner of a dry microfibre cloth into the water and coat liberally with salt, then hold it against the stain – don’t rub.

Hold it for about a minute, and then dust away the salt with another damp part of the cloth.
