The questions to ask yourself when hiring a commercial floor cleaning service.

Hiring a commercial cleaning company will give you peace of mind that you provide a safe, clean environment for your employees and customers.

But with so many commercial cleaning companies available, choosing the right one can be challenging.

Here is a checklist of questions to help you know what to look for when hiring a commercial cleaning company for your business, from the experts at ServiceMaster Clean.

  1. What services do they offer?

Before hiring a commercial floor cleaning company, you need to ensure that they can meet your requirements.

Cleaning needs vary between floor types and businesses.

For example, hard floors will require an entirely different cleaning regime to carpet, and the requirements for a care home will differ from that of an office.

Therefore, you’ll need a cleaning company with the experience, skill and tools to handle your specific business environment.

  1. Do they provide trained staff?

If you’re inviting an external company to take care of your flooring, you’ll need assurance that they’ll take appropriate care and use the right equipment in the right places.

Find out what training the cleaning company provides to its crew and what background checks they use to vet their staff.

  1. What equipment and supplies do they use?

A professional floor cleaning company should provide all the equipment and products necessary to carry out their duties.

However, if your business has specific requirements that need special cleaning equipment or supplies, perhaps to meet disinfection or sanitisation procedures, check that they can provide those.

  1. Can they offer a flexible schedule?

Limit the potential disruption to your business or organisation with evening or weekend cleaning.

Or perhaps you would like to be able to call on your cleaning company for emergency or ad hoc cleaning in addition to your regular schedule.

The company you choose should be able to offer a schedule that fits your business needs.

  1. What is their reputation like?

One way to assess the quality of a commercial floor cleaning company is to look at its customer feedback.

Read their customer testimonials and online reviews and ask if they have case studies demonstrating their expertise and reliability.

Also, find out if they hold any relevant industry accreditations, as these can provide credible endorsement of their services.

  1. Do they have insurance?

Appropriate insurance is essential should an accident or mishap occur when they’re cleaning your workplace flooring. Only consider a commercial floor cleaning company that has public liability insurance.

Make your flowers go further this Valentine’s Day with these tips.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

However it is that you’re celebrating today, it’s safe to say that flowers are probably involved in some way.

Whether your valentine surprises you with red roses or pink peonies today, it would be nice if they could last longer than the end of the week, wouldn’t it?

That’s why we’ve put together five handy tips for making your Valentine’s Day stems last longer.

  1. Trim your stems at an angle

You might have heard this one if you got the flowers from a florist, as it’s a must for proper flower care: Trim the stems at an angle before you put them in water.

Why is this advised?

Your flowers drink through a part of their stems called the xylem, which carries water and nutrients from the root to the flower.

Once picked, the end of a flower dries out, so cutting the end of their stems before putting them in water allows them to absorb water and drink properly.

Cutting them at an angle is advised because it allows more surface area to drink from.

While cutting straight is harmless, cutting at a 45-degree angle means the entire stem’s surface area is always in contact with the water and can absorb more helpful nutrients to live longer.

  1. Remove foliage under the water line

Any leaves and foliage and or leaves under the water line of your flowers should be removed.

This is because any foliage left under the water line will begin to rot, encouraging bacteria growth and damaging the plant.

  1. Add bleach and sugar solution

Hear us out on this one…

Add a little bleach to the flower water.

Add 1/4 teaspoon bleach per 1 litre of water.

Alternatively, you can add a solution of bleach and sugar.

Add three drops of bleach and one teaspoon of sugar in 1-quart (1 litre) water to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and prevent the water from growing cloudy.

  1. The penny drops

Copper is a natural fungicide, so dropping a penny into the vase will also help kill off the harmful bacteria festering in the old water and try to kill off your lovely bouquet.

  1. Refresh the water

Do you feel good in a dirty environment?

Neither do your stems.

For optimal bloom and vase life, refresh the water of your bouquet every 2-3 days or when it starts to look cloudy (as this is your sign of rot below the water line).

How well do you know your cleaning products?

Maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic workspace is essential to keeping your employees safe, happy, and productive.

However, effective cleaning requires using the right cleaning products which are appropriate for the task.

With so many different types available, it can be confusing to know which to use, so here’s a guide to commercial cleaning products from the experts at ServiceMaster Clean.

Understanding cleaning product categories

In general, most cleaning products can be grouped into the following categories.

Depending on your type of workplace, you’ll probably require several different types.

  • Surface cleaners:
    • Purpose – for general cleaning of surfaces like desks, countertops and appliances.
    • Products – multi-surface cleaners, antibacterial sprays.
  • Floor cleaners:
    • Purpose – designed for different floor types, including hardwood, tile and carpet.
    • Products – floor cleaners, carpet shampoos, floor polishes.
  • Bathroom cleaners:
    • Purpose – for cleaning bathroom surfaces like tiles, sinks and toilets.
    • Products – toilet bowl cleaners, bleach, tile and grout cleaners.
  • Kitchen cleaners:
    • Purpose – formulated for grease and food residue removal in kitchen areas.
    • Products – degreasers, oven cleaners.
  • Disinfectants:
    • Purpose – kill bacteria, viruses and germs to maintain a hygienic environment.
    • Products – disinfectant sprays, bleach, wipes.
  • Specialised cleaners:
    • Purpose – target specific surfaces or materials like glass, stainless steel or electronics.
    • Products – glass cleaners, stainless steel cleaners.
  • Green cleaning products:
    • Purpose – environmentally friendly alternatives with minimal ecological impact.
    • Products – eco-friendly cleaners, biodegradable solutions.

Choosing the right cleaning products

When deciding which cleaners to use, consider the following:

  • Assess the surface – different surfaces require specific cleaning agents. Ensure compatibility.
  • Safety precautions – follow guidelines on the product labels for proper usage and safety measures. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and masks.
  • Product reviews – research and read reviews to identify effective and reliable products.

Things to think about

Other considerations when it comes to cleaning products include the following:

  • Check that the right product is being used for the task.
  • Ensure your cleaning staff receive appropriate training before using cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Store all cleaning products according to the product specification’s guidelines.
  • Provide washing facilities and spillage clean-up kits near where any cleaning substances may be used in case of accidents.
  • Keep storage areas well-ventilated.

If you’re unsure which product to use for a particular cleaning task, consult a professional.

For the right cleaner for every task, trust ServiceMaster Clean SpotHero to remove any manner of stains and spills from carpet and upholstery.

Need professional cleaning?

Some stains are too stubborn and seem impossible to remove yourself.

If you have any concerns regarding your carpets and upholstery, call the professionals.

For help from your local experts, find your local ServiceMaster Clean today.

Why should you pay a company to clean your carpets if I can hire or buy a machine yourself?

Hiring a machine from your local supermarket or DIY store is always an option, but then so is fixing your car with just a spanner!

Are DIY machines all they’re cracked up to be?

With a hired machine, you get what you pay for.

These machines are designed to remove surface-level dirt and do a great job of putting water and detergent down.

But not a great job at removing it.

If you use too much shampoo, the machines are not powerful enough to remove the water and detergent, leaving your carpets wet with a residue for up to and over 24 hours.

With a carpet cleaning professional…

With a professional carpet cleaner like ServiceMaster Clean, your carpets are in the hands of a professional with £20,000+ worth of carpet cleaning machinery, professional products and years of experience.

We even clean furniture and upholstery, too!

Your carpets will be clean and dry within hours, so your home will be back to normal in no time.

The secret to professional carpet cleaning is the hot water extraction system.

Our specialist equipment removes dirt, shampoo residue and water from carpets so they stay cleaner for longer.

Professional vs. home cleaning

It’s not that fair to compare a hired machine and a professional company. It’s apples and oranges.

Experience, knowledge, equipment and effort – we will move all your furniture out of the way so you do not have to – you get what you pay for!

ServiceMaster Clean can apply a special fabric protector, giving fantastic resistance to spills, making them easy to mop up if cleaned away quickly.

The fabric protector also contains a unique anti-bacterial additive which kills many viruses and bacteria.

We recommend a professional cleaning of your carpets every six to twelve months to keep them free of dirt and looking fresh and to extend their usage.

You have already invested by purchasing your carpets, so why not look after them and ensure they can go the distance?

After all, would you try and fix your car with a spanner?

Don’t waste your waste this holiday season.

Let’s be real… the holidays generate a lot of waste.

From cooking packaging to toy boxes, chocolate wrappers and paper, there is no shortage of rubbish to haul away once the bins get collected again.

Thankfully, the importance of recycling is becoming recognised more every day.

But, even with our hearts in the right place, we can all still get things wrong.

Many plants and depots often find items with no place in the recycling.

If your council follows a commingled recycling policy, this is especially bad as it means a whole batch has to be sent to a landfill site anyway!

We’ve compiled a handy guide to help you know what festive items are recyclable and which are destined for landfill.

General Tips

Before we get too into Christmas crackers and sweetie wrappers, there are some rules of thumb to follow:

  • Put lids back on jars and bottles
  • Make sure any packaging is empty before binning
  • Keep items separate
  • Ensure items are clean and dry
  • Flatten cardboard

Different councils across the UK will have different approaches and guidelines regarding recycling.

You can use Recycle Now to get information on your local policy and recycling facilities.

Food waste

Now, this is a big one. What goes on your plate is a big part of any festive celebration. But, so is what goes in your bin.

When binning food waste, make sure you follow the aforementioned best practices.

You can recycle:

  • Glass bottles and jars – but not drinking glasses or Pyrex, as these have different melting points and are recycled differently.
  • Drinks cans and food tins
  • Milk cartons
  • Biscuit trays and tins
  • Crisp tubes (Pringles)

You can’t recycle:

  • Black plastic – the black pigment cannot be picked up by the laser technology used in the sorting process.
  • Metal tubes (tomato puree)
  • Cooking oil tins
  • Sweet wrappers
  • Crisp packets

Wrapping paper

For getting rid of wrapping paper, you may have heard of the scrunch test. Our tip here is: try it!

By scrunching wrapping paper into a ball, you can tell whether or not it can be recycled.

How does this work? Simple: if the paper stays in a ball, it is recyclable. However, when the paper is filled with too much glitter, foil, or sticky tape, it is non-recyclable.

When this happens, the paper will bounce back if you try to scrunch it, and it must go into general waste.

For eco-friendly wrapping:

  • Try to avoid wrapping paper that is dyed, laminated, or has glitter on it.
  • Choose eco-friendly paper, like 100% recycled paper, fabric, scarves, newspapers, maps, or old magazines.
  • Because sticky tape is not recyclable, try a specialist recyclable Washi or masking tape. Or try using things like string or ribbon instead.

For wrapping ideas in this vein, check out furoshiki – the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric.

Un-Recyclable items

As you may have gathered, you cannot organise materials by de-facto can and cannot be recycled.

Some items must not be recycled and need to be disposed of differently.

  • Nappies cannot be recycled and need to go into general waste
  • Not all plastics are recyclable. You cannot recycle plant pots, tubs, trays (think toothpaste), or rigid plastics like toys, Tupperware or CD/DVD cases

Some items can be recycled or disposed of economically, but not through your recycling collection.

  • Batteries thrown away alongside general waste/recycling can become punctured or crushed. This can cause them to explode and start fires. So, dispose of them safely by taking them to your local recycling plant or supermarket.
  • Fabrics and textiles cannot be placed in with other recycling and should be taken to a collection point, clothes bank, or charity shop to be gotten rid of.

Need more help?

We hope that these tips help you recycle responsibly this holiday season.

Should you run into trouble during this period, like a stain on your carpet or rug or even damage to your upholstery, contact your nearest ServiceMaster Clean business or book online for help from our experts.

Festive stain removal tips from ServiceMaster Clean.

Hosting holiday mingles can be stressful, but dealing with unwanted pesky stains can make your head spin.

Before you put hours of work into getting rid of stains, ensure you have the right tools and products.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we’ve been experts in carpet and upholstery cleaning for over 60 years, with the professional tools and expertise to remove any stains that should threaten your carpets this festive season.

With our handy tips, you’ll be able to get out lingering and in-the-moment stains.

Spot Hero

These tools include our patented ServiceMaster Clean Spot Hero, which distils all of our cleaning know-how into one handy bottle full of the power to eradicate most tough stains from carpet and upholstery. Including…

Red wine

With wine, especially red, it’s vital to blot it immediately with a white microfibre cloth until all the liquid has been absorbed to stop it from spreading.

Blotting is essential instead of wiping, as wiping may spread the stain further.

Once the liquid is absorbed, spray Spot Hero on a cloth to remove the remaining stain.

Hot chocolate and eggnog

These delicious holiday beverages can leave behind some ugly stains.

If the stain persists, use Spot Hero or mix white vinegar (one cup) and warm water (two cups) and gently work through the stain, then rinse again with warm water and blot the remaining moisture with a dry microfibre cloth.

Butter and grease

The grease in butter can set in quickly, making it a tricky but not impossible stain.

Start by removing the excess butter from the area, then dip a corner of a dry microfibre cloth into the water and coat liberally with salt, then hold it against the stain – don’t rub.

Hold it for about a minute, and then dust away the salt with another damp part of the cloth.

Or, if you want to avoid the chemistry lesson, use Spot Hero!

Cake icing

While decorating cakes and cookies is a fun family activity, icing is one stain you don’t want to mess with.

Go after these stains as soon as possible, scraping the excess off with a knife or spoon so it doesn’t dry.

Then, use Spot Hero to remove the stain.

Professional Repairs

Some stains are too stubborn to be removed without professional equipment.

Nothing says the holidays like candles everywhere, but no one wants to spill wax on a vintage tablecloth.

Should food colouring spill onto your carpet, you will require professional help from experts like your local ServiceMaster Clean technicians.

Our experts can use the latest tools to remove stains or, if they are set firmly into the carpet, will deploy services like a bonded insert to get your carpets looking fresh and clean in time for the new year!

For more help and advice on tackling festive stains during the upcoming holidays, stay tuned for more blogs or call 0800 021 3073 today.

Need your carpets cleaning?

Carpets in commercial spaces generally get a lot of footfall so they can get dirty quickly.

A regular carpet cleaning schedule will aid in improving the cleanliness and hygiene of your environment, improve the appearance of your carpet, and help it to last longer.

With a team of trained and professional carpet cleaners and our specialist equipment, we can help keep your carpets in tip-top condition.

In this blog post, the team at ServiceMaster Clean Devon shares how they ensure quality commercial carpet cleaning services.

Benefits of regular carpet cleaning

  • Regular carpet cleaning can prevent the flattening of carpet piles, saving time and money on replacement.
  • Frequent cleaning removes dust, dirt, germs and bacteria, which get deep into the carpet and often cause staining and traffic marks.
  • Plus, you’ll have peace of mind that you’re maintaining the highest hygiene standards on your premises.

Pre-clean site visit

We’ll visit your premises to provide a quotation for the carpet cleaning.

This visit involves thoroughly inspecting all carpeted areas to assess the scope of work.

We’ll discuss timings and schedule a date and time that’s least disruptive to your business operations.

We can do the cleaning outside your regular business hours if convenient.

Carpet clean

We use specialist, high-grade equipment for commercial carpet cleaning.

The process features a hot-rinse extraction to remove deep-set grit and dirt from your carpet and rugs so they stay clean for longer.

Using a hot water extraction system provides the best cleaning and, unlike other cleaning systems, ensures no shampoo or residues are left, which can cause carpets to get dirtier quickly.

It also means the carpet will dry within a few hours of cleaning, ensuring minimal downtime.

Ongoing care

To maintain the health of your carpets, they’ll require a regular cleaning programme.

We’ll recommend a schedule tailored to your carpet’s usage, whether monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually.

How to remedy a greasy mess on your upholstery.

Has your child spilt a plate of oily food on the sofa?

Or maybe you accidentally grabbed the seat while working on your car, leaving a greasy handprint.

It happens. What happens? Stains!

The upholstery experts at ServiceMaster Clean have got you covered.

Our experts have put together a few DIY solutions for removing grease stains from upholstery so you can see results like the one below:

grease removal

Removing Grease Stains from Upholstery

There are a few steps that we would recommend for removing grease stains from your upholstery, and here they are for you:

  1. Remove any solid materials from the area
  2. Blot the affected area with a clean, dry cloth
  3. Gently remove as much of the grease and excess moisture as possible
  4. Refer to the fabric care label of the stained upholstery item for recommended cleaning practices

A few codes on your upholstery labels or manufacturer paperwork will inform you how to clean your upholstery.

  • (W) – Upholstery should be cleaned with a water-based agent
  • (S) – Upholstery should be cleaned with a solvent-based dry cleaning agent
  • (S/W) – Upholstery can be cleaned with either a dry solvent or a water-based agent

Help! I don’t have a label!

No need to panic!

You can still attempt to clean the grease stain using the below DIY method, but you should test this on an inconspicuous area of your upholstery.

The second option is to call ServiceMaster Clean for professional upholstery cleaning services and recommendations.

The DIY Method for Removing Grease

Once you’ve removed any solids and blotted the grease and excess moisture from the stain, it’s time to start a treatment.

  • Sprinkle the stain with baking soda to absorb the last of the excess moisture (allow the baking soda to set for about 15 minutes)
  • Vacuum away the remainder of the baking soda.
  • For S code, use a dry-cleaning solvent to lift the stain (follow the manufacturing instructions on how to apply it)
  • If the care label has a W code, apply a homemade stain solution of one cup of water and two teaspoons of plain liquid dishwashing detergent designed to cut grease.
  • If S/W is the code that appears, use either of the techniques above.
  • When using a wet cleansing solution, gently blot the solution over the stain using a clean cloth.
  • Rinse the cloth out and repeat until the stain begins to lighten.
  • To avoid saturating the upholstery or the cushion underneath, blot with a dry, clean cloth after each application of the cleaning solution.

Or, if you don’t have a chemistry degree, you can cut the DIY substances and use the tried and tested ServiceMaster Clean SpotHero to eliminate stains in a flash.

How to make sure your Halloween party is scarily good.

Halloween is coming.

It’s the perfect holiday for people who love sweets and chocolate, dressing up, and being a big kid.

Whether you’re planning a ghostly gathering for kids or grown-ups, some Halloween essentials can’t be missed.

Here are our tips on preparing the perfect Halloween monster bash.

  1. Make it age-appropriate

No matter your guest demographic, ensure it is appropriate for the age of your guests.

For example, some scarier decorations might be too intense for young kids.

If your guests are all adults, you’re probably safe to go all out with the fright factor, but the last thing you want from a fun kid’s party is to upset them!

  1. Avoid hard-to-clean substances

In our experience, some spooky substances are an absolute monster to remove from surfaces and furnishings.

While they are essentials for many, substances like fake blood, silly string, and the makeup from Halloween costume sets can easily stain carpets, curtains, and upholstery and are notoriously difficult to remove without professional assistance.

If any spillages or issues with these substances occur, your local ServiceMaster Clean technicians will remove them in a flash with their specialist expertise and high-quality equipment.

  1. Set the scene with some monstrous media

Prepare for your guests and set the mood for a fun and festive time with a combo of themed media.

Make a playlist of your favourite songs to get you in the spooky spirit.

Some hits like Thriller and the Monster Mash will surely get guests feeling Halloween-y.

And if you don’t have time to make your own, check out our Halloween playlist that’s sure to have your party jumping with fright.

You could also play classic Halloween films in the background for extra ambience.

For horror fans, you could play one of the many Halloween or Scream films, Friday the 13th or The Exorcist.

For a less frightening time, try some appropriate films for a younger audience, like The Corpse Bride, Wendall and Wilde, The Addams Family, or Beetlejuice.

  1. Plan ahead

Your gathering doesn’t need to be a massive expense.

Throwing a memorable, sustainable, but inexpensive party merely requires a little forward-thinking.

The only strangers turning up on your doorstep should be trick-or-treaters.

Establish a “ghouls list” and get an exact headcount for the evening by specifying whether or not people should bring plus 1s.

When you invite your guests, set an RSVP date.

If you host guests often, you can also use decorations that can be used more than once.

You can source a lot of cheap and inexpensive decorations from discount stores.

Halloween is meant to be scary, but one thing you shouldn’t be afraid of is asking for help.

Ask your guests to help out by bringing beverages or their favourite (possibly themed) dish.

This might save you valuable prep time ahead of your party.

You can also plan fun activities like games or a prize for the best costume.

  1. Clear away the cobwebs

While giant spider webs are appropriate for Halloween, you don’t want to invite guests into a messy home.

With the potential dangers of a dirty carpet, don’t miss a trick by treating yourself to professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services from ServiceMaster Clean.

As experts in cleaning for over 60 years, we use the best tools, people and equipment to ensure your carpets and furnishing are so clean it’s almost scary!

In the event of any unwanted spills or stains, we’ll be there to help with the clean-up.

Wool carpets have many benefits, but cleaning them can be tricky without the right expertise.

The products and methods you use to clean your carpet can do more harm than good.

This can include:

  • Damage to fibres
  • Loss of colour
  • Shrinkage in water

As a result, extreme caution should be exercised when cleaning wool carpets.

How we work to keep your hard floors clean.

Hard floors are generally easy to keep clean, and regular mopping will help maintain the floor’s appearance and hygiene.

However, from time to time, a deeper hard floor clean is necessary to:

  • Remove ingrained dirt that regular mopping will not achieve.
  • Prolong the life of the flooring.
  • Enhance the appearance and make colours more vibrant.
  • Remove grease and contamination that can cause a slip hazard in commercial kitchens and restaurants.
  • Maintain hygiene levels within changing areas and wet rooms where people walk barefoot.

At ServiceMaster Clean Devon, we professionally strip, deep clean, seal and polish hard floors to remove stains, grease and grime, kill bacteria, bring back the shine and protect the floor. We clean all hard floor types, including Karndean, natural stone, tiles, vinyl and wood.

Some flooring types, such as wood and natural stone, require specialist treatment to protect their integrity. Our experts are fully trained in using the right equipment and products to restore and enhance your floors without damage.

ServiceMaster Clean Devon’s hard floor cleaning process

Pre-clean site visit

  • We’ll visit your premises to provide a quotation for the works and thoroughly inspect all areas to determine the floor type and the correct sealant to apply.
  • We’ll discuss your requirements and ascertain vital information such as footfall volume, how easily you can maintain the floor once the finish is applied, how long the area can be out of use, etc.

Floor clean

  • We vacuum the floor to remove dry dust and debris.
  • A chemical polish remover is applied to remove any previous coatings and contamination.
  • After the product has had time to work, we carry out a deep roto scrub with a slow-speed rotary floor scrubber. This process removes any polish build-up and loosens any dirt.
  • The dirt is removed with a high-pressure extraction machine.
  • The final step is to seal the floor using a sheen of your choice.

We take detailed before and after photos and can provide job reports if required.

  • Before leaving, we advise on the correct products and cleaning procedures to maintain the floor.
  • We can return at six-monthly intervals to clean and spray buff the floor or re-apply polish as necessary.

Our top tips for cleaning and maintaining hard floors.

Hard floors are popular in commercial settings due to their durability and low maintenance.

Hard floors are generally easy to keep clean, and a regular cleaning schedule will help maintain the floor’s appearance and hygiene.

Here are ServiceMaster Clean Devon‘s tips and advice for cleaning hard floors.

  1. Sweep or vacuum first

Before mopping, sweep or vacuum the floor to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris.

This process prevents these particles from scratching the floor surface during cleaning.

  1. Use the right cleaning solution

Different hard flooring materials require specific cleaning solutions.

For example, hardwood floors should be cleaned with a hardwood floor cleaner, while tile floors may need a tile and grout cleaner.

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your specific flooring type.

  1. Avoid excess water

Excessive moisture can damage hardwood and laminate floors.

When cleaning these surfaces, use a damp (not soaking wet) mop or cloth. You can use more water for tiles and linoleum, but avoid flooding the floor.

  1. Choose the right mop

Microfibre mops are great for most hard floors because they trap dirt and grime effectively.

Consider using a mop with a reusable and machine-washable microfibre pad to reduce waste.

  1. Scrub grout lines

If you have tile floors with grout lines, use a grout brush or an old toothbrush to scrub the grout periodically to help maintain a clean and fresh appearance.

  1. Use a PH-neutral cleaner

When in doubt, choose a PH-neutral cleaner for hard floors. It’s less likely to damage the finish and is generally safe for most types of flooring.

  1. Dry quickly

Dry the floor soon after mopping to prevent water damage or streaks.

A dry mop or towel can help with this.

  1. Protect high-traffic areas

Consider using rugs or mats to protect the floor from excessive wear and tear in areas with heavy foot traffic.

  1. Address spills promptly

Wipe up spills as soon as they happen to prevent staining or damage to the floor’s finish.

  1. Regular maintenance

Establish a regular cleaning schedule based on the needs of your floor type. High-traffic areas may need more frequent cleaning than less-used spaces.

  1. Avoid harsh chemicals

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or products that could harm your specific flooring type. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  1. Move furniture carefully

Use protective pads on the legs to prevent scratching the floor.

Lift furniture rather than dragging it to avoid damage.

  1. Inspect and repair

Periodically inspect your floors for any signs of damage or wear and address any issues promptly.

Spotting problems early can help prevent more extensive and costly repairs later on.

  1. Consult professional help

If you’re unsure how to clean or maintain your specific type of hard flooring, consider consulting a professional cleaner or the manufacturer for guidance.

By following these tips and establishing a regular cleaning routine, you can keep your hard floors looking their best and extend their lifespan.

This case study from ServiceMaster Clean in Devon details how they help institutions and businesses maintain pristine standards of floor cleanliness.

All flooring needs regular cleaning to maintain hygiene, enhance appearance and prolong life.

In a commercial environment where footfall is high, frequent cleaning is essential.

Outsourcing your floor cleaning to an external company like ServiceMaster Clean ensures your standards remain effortlessly high.

Here are two examples of organisations that have benefited from our floor cleaning services in Devon.

The University of Exeter

The University of Exeter requires the team in Devon to clean the carpets in the bedroom and communal areas within its student residence halls.

The carpets within these areas are often stained, and some are problematic, which our teams need to resolve.

Using our specialist cleaning products, combined with high-pressured water and steam, we remove the ingrained dirt and eliminate or reduce the staining.

The university values our service as it frees up its in-house cleaning team to focus on deep cleaning the other areas of the residence buildings ready for the students to occupy.

Exmouth Leisure Centre

Exmouth Leisure Centre has a floor care program with ServiceMaster Clean.

We regularly attend the site to deep clean hard floors in the changing rooms, café areas, toilets and exercise areas.

Typically, the floors have a lot of ingrained dirt from mop usage.

We use a specialist floor cleaning product to loosen the dirt and contaminants from the floor’s surface.

Once the dirt is visibly lifted, we scrub the floors with a rotary floor scrubber and extract the grime with a high-powered steam extraction machine.

The steam extraction leaves the floors clean and sanitised, ready for use.

Our cleaning requires little downtime so the facility can stay open with minimal disruption to the leisure centre’s users.

Why buy a wool carpet?

There is a lot of choice involved in buying a carpet, as there are so many different types.

The most common synthetic fibres used in carpet manufacturing are:

  1. Nylon
  2. Polyester
  3. Polypropylene (olefin)
  4. TriextaA

When up against these big hitters, how does the humble wool carpet compare?

This week at ServiceMaster Clean, we’re looking at the benefits of wool carpets, from sustainability to safety, to show how, with a wool carpet, there’s sheerly something for everyone.

Maintenance and appearance

Strap in because these are the big ones.

When you’ve invested in a brand-spanking new carpet, you want to know that it can withstand everything that everyday living will throw at it, whether muddy footprints or dog wee!

Therefore, any prospective carpet buyer needs to ask some essential questions, including:

  • Will the carpet lose its texture, thickness or colour gradual loss of colour?
  • Will it retain spots and damage?

On this front, wool carpets are fantastic.

They are infamous for their long-lasting good appearance, which comes from their ability to respond excellently to dry and wet cleaning.

They are resistant to soiling, which means they retain their colour brilliantly.

The only maintenance and appearance issue that wool carpets face is staining.

However, this is only if the stains are allowed to seep into the fabric.

If spills and stains are handled promptly by carpet cleaning professionals, you shouldn’t have any issues.

On the other hand, synthetic fibres initially respond well to cleaning but may worsen in cleaning ability over time as the fibres become damaged.

Wool carpets are more sustainable since regular shearing is essential to caring for sheep.

Each year, there is a fresh supply of natural wool for the carpet industry.

Wool is also biodegradable and recyclable and won’t clog up a landfill site for decades or centuries.

So, if one of your primary concerns is living sustainably, a wool carpet is a brilliant addition to your home.

Wool carpets may also be considered for their safety compared to other options.

They are naturally flame retardant and have a higher ignition point than synthetic carpets.

With a wool carpet, you don’t have to worry about dropping matches or other fire hazards in the same way, as they won’t send your home up in smoke.

Insulation and breathability

Wool carpets are also natural insulators, which is a benefit during the cost of living crisis.

Wool also naturally absorbs humidity and serves as a natural filter, releasing heat when the atmosphere becomes dry and improving air quality by trapping and removing airborne allergens.

How ServiceMaster Clean can help your wool carpet

At ServiceMaster Clean, many of our branches, such as Leicester and Kingston Upon Thames, are accredited by WoolSafe:

Tips for taking care of your upholstered furniture.

Are you cleaning your upholstery? You should be.

Upholstered furniture needs as much care and attention as your carpets.

When facing the cost of living crisis, buying or cleaning used or existing furniture is much cheaper than buying new.

Not only will this preserve the colours and textures, but it will also help to remove stains and smells.

Especially if you have pets.

This is because prolonged exposure to the pollutants they leave behind can degrade upholstery.

But how do you even go about cleaning your upholstery? And what do you do if you stain an upholstered item?

ServiceMaster Clean has the answers.

How to clean your upholstery

For at-home upholstery cleaning, remove cushions and use a nozzle attachment on your vacuum for to hard-to-reach areas.

Ensure you beat the upholstery to loosen the dust and to get it all.

Once you’ve done this, plump up your seat cushions.

You should also be rotating your seat cushions often. But why?

Simple: Plumping and rotating help your cushions keep their shape and avoid premature wear.

Make sure you’re also airing out your furniture. Opening a window to allow fresh air to circulate eliminates the need for chemical air fresheners.

We understand that you probably want a room that gets good light.

However, do try to avoid any upholstered furniture in direct sunlight.

The reason for this is that it will degrade the quality of the materials over time.

What to do if you stain your upholstery

Nightmare! You’ve spilt hot coffee on your upholstery and left a massive mark right in the middle of it.

Don’t panic. Think ServiceMaster Clean.

Your upholstery is delicate, but there are anti-stain treatments that are highly effective with the proper application.

We use a special fabric protector that gives fantastic resistance to spills.

This makes it easy to deal with any future stains quickly and effectively.

Our fabric protector also contains a unique additive that kills viruses and bacteria.

External clean ready for redecoration

However, the property exterior required preparatory work before any decorating could begin.

We were called in to prepare the property ready for the decorators.

Using professional-use biocides, we removed algae, mildew and lichens from the guttering and fascia boards and then gave the whole building a deep clean.
