Chris Edmonds from ServiceMaster Clean West Suffolk reflects on growing up around his dad’s family business for Father’s Day.

The UK celebrates Father’s Day this weekend, and to mark the occasion, we sat down with Chris Edmonds from ServiceMaster Clean West Suffolk to see what inheriting the family business from his father has taught him.

What was it like to build a business with your father?

“I grew up alongside the business as my parents built it, starting in the early 80’s with just a single garage and a Ford Cortina estate. Later, I worked for them during the school holidays and when [I was] back from University. By then, they had a few vehicles and premises of their own; when I moved back and worked full-time with my dad as we prepared for his retirement.”

“It was generally good fun. We get on well and are good mates. He likes a story and a dad joke, and I’ve heard them all a million times. Now and again, he’ll pull one out that he’s never told me but it’s rare!”

“There were times obviously when we had a difference of opinion. Working that closely with a parent or partner has its stresses but we never took it home after a day’s work. And when it came to the crunch he’d say, ‘While it’s my business we’ll do it my way, when it’s your business you can do it your way’ and you can’t say much fairer than that.”

What are your earliest memories of the business?

“Back in our first house in Bury St Edmunds (we still work for the lady who helped us buy it over forty years ago) Dad would sometimes bring rugs back to clean in our lounge. I’d help by spinning his carpet disk, so it’d lay flat for him to put the roto on. There was a knack to it. They did more bonnet cleaning back then not so much extraction cleaning as today.”

“They also sponsored my football team from under 9’s onwards. So, we’d all have a yellow kit with ServiceMaster on the front and go to away games in Dad’s big yellow van. It was quite iconic and I’m sure I was very proud.”

What about ServiceMaster Clean that made it the right company for your career?

“I was very familiar with [ServiceMaster Clean] having grown up around it, and it gave my wife and I the chance to work together when we moved back to the area and have something of our own.”

“Running your own business has its positives. You’re in control largely of what you do and when. But, of course, that comes with greater responsibility too. I was generally in customer services and then teaching – so people-based areas. That helps as being a sole trader I’m the voice on the phone, the guy who replies to the emails and the face that turns up on your doorstep.”

“But it works: we won the network Customer Service Award a couple of years ago and have loads of Five-star reviews across different platforms.”

What core values has your father passed down to you?

“To take pride in your work and all you do. We’re not into making a fast buck. We try and do a great job at a fair price so that people come back, tell their families and friends, and then they book us in, and so it grows.”

What are some of the most rewarding moments you’ve experienced since taking over the business?

“We won the Customer Service Award before Dad retired but by then he was just doing a bit in the office, so I felt that was something I’d achieved. But every week there are little moments when customers walk in really chuffed as you’ve got a stain out of their carpet, they thought they’d have to replace or say ‘Wow, the sofa you’ve cleaned looks like new’; little things like that.

Is your father proud of how the business has grown since his retirement?

“Yes, I think he’s proud of the work we’re doing. I sometimes hear him on the phone to old customers and it’s nice to hear what he tells them about me. He’s not one for blowing smoke so I know he means it.”

“Rain, rain go away, come back another day” or not at all! – we live in the UK, unfortunately, on average it rains 133 days of the year. Rain can be a complete nightmare, especially for pet owners and young kids about with mud traipsed across the house.

Most of you have probably looked at your carpets and panicked, then started to aggressively rub the fresh mud, in a desperate attempt to clean it up as quickly! Well, that will usually make things worse!

Mud Cleaning Methods

If you’re looking for a few methods on how to clean mud from your carpet, well you’re in luck, read below!

Mud Cleaning Method #1: Washing Up Liquid

  1. Pick up all of the large mud clumps from the carpet. (We would advise using protective gloves throughout the cleaning process)
  2. Apply a mixture of baking powder and salt to the mud stain. Allow the mixture to sit for a couple of hours to soak up all of the moisture from the stain. Then, vacuum away the mixture
  3. Mix a tablespoon of washing up liquid with two mugs of warm water and saturate the stain with the solution., using a clean cloth
  4. Blot the excess liquid using a good absorbent paper towel
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the mud stain is removed
  6. Sponge the carpet with cold water and blot away, again with a paper towel
  7. Let it air dry.

Mud Cleaning Method #2: Vinegar

You won’t need as long for this method, in fact, probably only about 15 minutes.

  1. Add half a cup of vinegar, add about a tablespoon of washing up liquid and mix
  2. Using a brush, gently rub the solution onto the mud stain
  3. Rinse the area with cold water using either a clean cloth or sponge
  4. Repeat the process until the stain has gone
  5. Once the stain has been removed, dry the carpet with a clean towel.

Mud Cleaning Method #3: Shop brought stain remover

These homemade attempts may fail you and if they do just buy a commercial stain remover. They’re all usually quite simple to use, usually all you have to do is spray the product on the stained area and allow it to sit. You will find information about the amount of time the product needs to sit in order for it to work, on the care label.

After you’ve waited for the stain remover to sit for the specified amount of time, you then need to wipe the carpet clean (we would recommend using a sponge to rub the stained area).

Mud Cleaning Method #4: Get the professionals in

If you don’t have the time to be kneeling on the floor blotting away at the stain or don’t have the products to do so, you can always call a professional carpet cleaner like ServiceMaster Clean to remove the stain for you.

Find your nearest ServiceMaster Clean and contact them today for any of carpet or upholstery cleaning needs or book online in select locations.

How to make your commercial flooring last longer.

The flooring in commercial spaces is often subject to extensive foot traffic, so it needs looking after to extend its lifespan.

An appropriate cleaning and care routine will help maintain a clean, safe and attractive workspace and delay the expense of a replacement floor.

Here are some tips on how to extend the lifespan of commercial flooring from the experts at ServiceMaster Clean Devon.

Regular cleaning and maintenance

Develop a routine cleaning schedule appropriate to the type of flooring (e.g., carpet, hardwood, softwood, vinyl, tile).

Then ensure you vacuum or sweep regularly to remove dirt, dust and debris that can scratch or wear down the flooring surface.

You must also utilise appropriate cleaning products recommended by the flooring manufacturer to avoid damage.

Immediate spill cleanup

  • Promptly clean up spills to prevent stains and water damage.
  • Use absorbent materials or a dry white cloth for liquid spills and avoid using harsh chemicals that can degrade the flooring material.

Use door mats

Place high-quality door mats at all entrances to trap dirt, moisture and debris before they reach the flooring and regularly clean and replace them to ensure their effectiveness.

Implement preventative measures

  • Use furniture pads or casters to prevent scratches and indentations caused by heavy furniture.
  • Install protective mats under rolling chairs or high-traffic areas to reduce wear and tear.

Control humidity and temperature

Maintain proper humidity levels to prevent warping or damage to wood flooring and avoid exposing flooring to extreme temperature fluctuations.

These can cause expansion or contraction.

Regular inspection and repair

Regularly inspect the flooring for signs of damage, wear or loose tiles and planks.

Immediately repair or replace damaged sections to prevent further deterioration.

Proper floor care for different materials

Understand the specific care requirements for different flooring materials (e.g., polishing for hardwood and sealing for natural stone).

Follow the manufacturer guidelines for cleaning and maintenance to ensure longevity.

Use floor protectors during events or maintenance

Use temporary floor protection products (e.g., mats or protection boards) during events, renovations or maintenance activities to prevent damage from foot traffic or equipment.

Educate staff on proper maintenance

Train cleaning staff and employees on proper floor care techniques and the importance of adhering to maintenance guidelines.

Professional cleaning and maintenance

Schedule periodic deep cleaning and maintenance services by professional commercial cleaners to remove embedded dirt and grime.

Need a professional floor cleaner?

By implementing these practices, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your commercial flooring, reduce maintenance costs and preserve the aesthetic appeal of your workspace.

How to remedy a greasy mess on your upholstery.

Has your child spilt a plate of oily food on the sofa?

Or maybe you accidentally grabbed the seat while working on your car, leaving a greasy handprint.

It happens. What happens? Stains!

The upholstery experts at ServiceMaster Clean have got you covered.

Our experts have put together a few DIY solutions for removing grease stains from upholstery so you can see results like the one below:

grease removal

Removing Grease Stains from Upholstery

There are a few steps that we would recommend for removing grease stains from your upholstery, and here they are for you:

  1. Remove any solid materials from the area
  2. Blot the affected area with a clean, dry cloth
  3. Gently remove as much of the grease and excess moisture as possible
  4. Refer to the fabric care label of the stained upholstery item for recommended cleaning practices

A few codes on your upholstery labels or manufacturer paperwork will inform you how to clean your upholstery.

  • (W) – Upholstery should be cleaned with a water-based agent
  • (S) – Upholstery should be cleaned with a solvent-based dry cleaning agent
  • (S/W) – Upholstery can be cleaned with either a dry solvent or a water-based agent

Help! I don’t have a label!

No need to panic!

You can still attempt to clean the grease stain using the below DIY method, but you should test this on an inconspicuous area of your upholstery.

The second option is to call ServiceMaster Clean for professional upholstery cleaning services and recommendations.

The DIY Method for Removing Grease

Once you’ve removed any solids and blotted the grease and excess moisture from the stain, it’s time to start a treatment.

  • Sprinkle the stain with baking soda to absorb the last of the excess moisture (allow the baking soda to set for about 15 minutes)
  • Vacuum away the remainder of the baking soda.
  • For S code, use a dry-cleaning solvent to lift the stain (follow the manufacturing instructions on how to apply it)
  • If the care label has a W code, apply a homemade stain solution of one cup of water and two teaspoons of plain liquid dishwashing detergent designed to cut grease.
  • If S/W is the code that appears, use either of the techniques above.
  • When using a wet cleansing solution, gently blot the solution over the stain using a clean cloth.
  • Rinse the cloth out and repeat until the stain begins to lighten.
  • To avoid saturating the upholstery or the cushion underneath, blot with a dry, clean cloth after each application of the cleaning solution.

Or, if you don’t have a chemistry degree, you can cut the DIY substances and use the tried and tested ServiceMaster Clean SpotHero to eliminate stains in a flash.

How ServiceMaster Clean Devon deep-cleaned a vacant property that was in a less-than-satisfactory state from the previous tenants.

Preparing a vacant property for the next occupant can sometimes require more than a straightforward cleaning.

If a previous resident has left unwanted contents and potential health hazards, a specialist approach is needed, and that’s where ServiceMaster Clean can help.

Take a look at this recent case study from ServiceMaster Clean Devon to find out more.

What was the issue?

ServiceMaster Clean Devon was appointed by a housing association to conduct a deep cleaning of a house in multiple occupations (HMO) in the Torbay area.

The previous residents had left the home unfit for habitation with dangerous drug paraphernalia throughout the property.

What we did

Over two days, a team of two completed the following:

  • A needle sweep to remove all old used needles and sharps. This included extracting sharps from the pipe work in the sinks, which had been placed down the plug holes.
  • Deep cleaning all surfaces, including internal windows, woodwork, doors, walls and radiators, to remove dust, grime and bodily fluids.
  • Deep cleaning of all kitchen and bathroom areas to leave hygienic and ready for decoration works.
  • Hard floor cleaning to the bathroom areas using alkaline floor cleaning solution and a rotary scrubber to lift all ingrained dirt and staining. The dirt was then extracted with steam extraction equipment to leave the floor clean and hygienic.
  • Carpet cleaning with a heavy-duty carpet shampoo to clean the carpets in all the bedrooms, hallways, stairs and lounges. The carpets were left fresh, hygienic, and with all foul smells removed, ready for the carpet fitters to remove them without the risk of contamination to themselves.

The result

Following the deep clean, we received the following feedback from the client:

“My first impression of the clean was ‘Wow!’. We can’t believe the transformation. As always, your technicians have done an amazing job here, and I am more than pleased with the results.”

“The other cleaning company was cheaper, but I knew I would get the right results with you.”

How ServiceMaster Clean cleans the exterior of commercial properties.

Finally, the winter is over, and we’re heading into spring!

Now that brighter and hopefully drier days are ahead, it’s the perfect time to refresh your property’s exterior.

A build-up of dirt, moss and weeds over the winter can affect the visual appearance of your property and also create slip hazards on walkways.

However, this can be fixed with an external spring clean, and ServiceMaster Clean can take care of this for you.

Our professional exterior cleaning services will help maintain your premises, improve their appearance, and reduce walkway slip hazards.

We’ve put together a blog post on how our experts can help.

Pressure washing

Our high-grade pressure washing equipment uses a combination of appropriate pressure and heat to clean external surfaces.

Pressure washing can remove dirt, unsightly marks, moss, algae, and chewing gum without scratching or scarring the surface.

It can be used to clean and rejuvenate the following:

  • Masonry
  • Soffits
  • Facias
  • Walkways
  • Paving
  • Fire escapes
  • Decking and patios

After cleaning, with all surface dirt removed, the building will be left looking fresh and have had its slippery surfaces eradicated.

Gutter cleaning

During the winter, dirt, leaves, and moss build up in gutters and cause blockages that can lead to overflow and water damage.

Our high-level gutter vac combined with pressure washing will clear all detritus from your gutters, allowing drainage water to flow freely and preventing potential property damage.

Window cleaning

Our reach-and-wash window cleaning system with purified water gives us access to windows from the ground.

How to keep high-traffic areas in your commercial spaces clean.

Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in high-traffic areas such as entrances, hallways, and common areas can be challenging.

These areas are prone to dirty quickly due to the volume of people occupying or passing through the space.

Thankfully, the experts at ServiceMaster Clean have compiled some tips to help you keep these busy areas clean.

Use door mats

Entranceways are usually the busiest place in a building, and dirt can easily track in from outside.

Therefore, place durable entrance mats inside and outside of entrances to trap dirt and moisture before they enter the building.

Then, regularly clean and maintain these mats to ensure their effectiveness.

Frequent cleaning schedule

Establish what your high-traffic areas are, and create a regular cleaning schedule for them.

These areas should be cleaned more frequently than others to maintain cleanliness throughout the day.

Spot cleaning

To keep on top of these areas, implement spot cleaning throughout the day to address spills, stains and messes as soon as they occur.

Prompt attention to these issues can prevent them from becoming more challenging to clean later.

Choose the right cleaning products

Select cleaning products specifically formulated for high-traffic areas and capable of effectively removing dirt, grease and germs.

Consider using disinfectants to sanitise frequently touched surfaces.

Floor care

High-traffic areas often experience heavy wear and tear on floors.

Use appropriate cleaning techniques, such as vacuuming, sweeping and mopping, to keep floors clean and safe.

Consider applying floor sealants or finishes to protect against scratches and stains.

Air quality control

High-traffic areas can also impact indoor air quality.

Consider using air purifiers and ventilation systems to remove airborne pollutants and improve air circulation.

Regularly replace HVAC filters to prevent the build-up of dust and allergens.

Focus on touchpoints

Pay close attention to frequently touched surfaces such as light switches, elevator buttons and door handles.

These areas can harbour a high concentration of germs, so they should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Train staff

Ensure your cleaning staff receive proper training on cleaning techniques, product usage and safety protocols for high-traffic areas.

Encourage them to communicate any cleaning challenges or maintenance issues they encounter.

Monitor and adjust

Regularly assess the cleanliness of high-traffic areas and adjust your cleaning practice as necessary.

Look for areas that may require additional attention or modifications to your cleaning routine.

Need a professional cleaner?

By implementing these cleaning tips, you can effectively maintain cleanliness and hygiene in high-traffic areas, creating a safer and more pleasant environment for your employees, customers and visitors.

If all of this seems like a lot to keep on top of, call in the professionals.

The questions to ask yourself when hiring a commercial floor cleaning service.

Hiring a commercial cleaning company will give you peace of mind that you provide a safe, clean environment for your employees and customers.

But with so many commercial cleaning companies available, choosing the right one can be challenging.

Here is a checklist of questions to help you know what to look for when hiring a commercial cleaning company for your business, from the experts at ServiceMaster Clean.

  1. What services do they offer?

Before hiring a commercial floor cleaning company, you need to ensure that they can meet your requirements.

Cleaning needs vary between floor types and businesses.

For example, hard floors will require an entirely different cleaning regime to carpet, and the requirements for a care home will differ from that of an office.

Therefore, you’ll need a cleaning company with the experience, skill and tools to handle your specific business environment.

  1. Do they provide trained staff?

If you’re inviting an external company to take care of your flooring, you’ll need assurance that they’ll take appropriate care and use the right equipment in the right places.

Find out what training the cleaning company provides to its crew and what background checks they use to vet their staff.

  1. What equipment and supplies do they use?

A professional floor cleaning company should provide all the equipment and products necessary to carry out their duties.

However, if your business has specific requirements that need special cleaning equipment or supplies, perhaps to meet disinfection or sanitisation procedures, check that they can provide those.

  1. Can they offer a flexible schedule?

Limit the potential disruption to your business or organisation with evening or weekend cleaning.

Or perhaps you would like to be able to call on your cleaning company for emergency or ad hoc cleaning in addition to your regular schedule.

The company you choose should be able to offer a schedule that fits your business needs.

  1. What is their reputation like?

One way to assess the quality of a commercial floor cleaning company is to look at its customer feedback.

Read their customer testimonials and online reviews and ask if they have case studies demonstrating their expertise and reliability.

Also, find out if they hold any relevant industry accreditations, as these can provide credible endorsement of their services.

  1. Do they have insurance?

Appropriate insurance is essential should an accident or mishap occur when they’re cleaning your workplace flooring. Only consider a commercial floor cleaning company that has public liability insurance.

Make your flowers go further this Valentine’s Day with these tips.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

However it is that you’re celebrating today, it’s safe to say that flowers are probably involved in some way.

Whether your valentine surprises you with red roses or pink peonies today, it would be nice if they could last longer than the end of the week, wouldn’t it?

That’s why we’ve put together five handy tips for making your Valentine’s Day stems last longer.

  1. Trim your stems at an angle

You might have heard this one if you got the flowers from a florist, as it’s a must for proper flower care: Trim the stems at an angle before you put them in water.

Why is this advised?

Your flowers drink through a part of their stems called the xylem, which carries water and nutrients from the root to the flower.

Once picked, the end of a flower dries out, so cutting the end of their stems before putting them in water allows them to absorb water and drink properly.

Cutting them at an angle is advised because it allows more surface area to drink from.

While cutting straight is harmless, cutting at a 45-degree angle means the entire stem’s surface area is always in contact with the water and can absorb more helpful nutrients to live longer.

  1. Remove foliage under the water line

Any leaves and foliage and or leaves under the water line of your flowers should be removed.

This is because any foliage left under the water line will begin to rot, encouraging bacteria growth and damaging the plant.

  1. Add bleach and sugar solution

Hear us out on this one…

Add a little bleach to the flower water.

Add 1/4 teaspoon bleach per 1 litre of water.

Alternatively, you can add a solution of bleach and sugar.

Add three drops of bleach and one teaspoon of sugar in 1-quart (1 litre) water to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and prevent the water from growing cloudy.

  1. The penny drops

Copper is a natural fungicide, so dropping a penny into the vase will also help kill off the harmful bacteria festering in the old water and try to kill off your lovely bouquet.

  1. Refresh the water

Do you feel good in a dirty environment?

Neither do your stems.

For optimal bloom and vase life, refresh the water of your bouquet every 2-3 days or when it starts to look cloudy (as this is your sign of rot below the water line).

How well do you know your cleaning products?

Maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic workspace is essential to keeping your employees safe, happy, and productive.

However, effective cleaning requires using the right cleaning products which are appropriate for the task.

With so many different types available, it can be confusing to know which to use, so here’s a guide to commercial cleaning products from the experts at ServiceMaster Clean.

Understanding cleaning product categories

In general, most cleaning products can be grouped into the following categories.

Depending on your type of workplace, you’ll probably require several different types.

  • Surface cleaners:
    • Purpose – for general cleaning of surfaces like desks, countertops and appliances.
    • Products – multi-surface cleaners, antibacterial sprays.
  • Floor cleaners:
    • Purpose – designed for different floor types, including hardwood, tile and carpet.
    • Products – floor cleaners, carpet shampoos, floor polishes.
  • Bathroom cleaners:
    • Purpose – for cleaning bathroom surfaces like tiles, sinks and toilets.
    • Products – toilet bowl cleaners, bleach, tile and grout cleaners.
  • Kitchen cleaners:
    • Purpose – formulated for grease and food residue removal in kitchen areas.
    • Products – degreasers, oven cleaners.
  • Disinfectants:
    • Purpose – kill bacteria, viruses and germs to maintain a hygienic environment.
    • Products – disinfectant sprays, bleach, wipes.
  • Specialised cleaners:
    • Purpose – target specific surfaces or materials like glass, stainless steel or electronics.
    • Products – glass cleaners, stainless steel cleaners.
  • Green cleaning products:
    • Purpose – environmentally friendly alternatives with minimal ecological impact.
    • Products – eco-friendly cleaners, biodegradable solutions.

Choosing the right cleaning products

When deciding which cleaners to use, consider the following:

  • Assess the surface – different surfaces require specific cleaning agents. Ensure compatibility.
  • Safety precautions – follow guidelines on the product labels for proper usage and safety measures. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and masks.
  • Product reviews – research and read reviews to identify effective and reliable products.

Things to think about

Other considerations when it comes to cleaning products include the following:

  • Check that the right product is being used for the task.
  • Ensure your cleaning staff receive appropriate training before using cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Store all cleaning products according to the product specification’s guidelines.
  • Provide washing facilities and spillage clean-up kits near where any cleaning substances may be used in case of accidents.
  • Keep storage areas well-ventilated.

If you’re unsure which product to use for a particular cleaning task, consult a professional.

For the right cleaner for every task, trust ServiceMaster Clean SpotHero to remove any manner of stains and spills from carpet and upholstery.

Need professional cleaning?

Some stains are too stubborn and seem impossible to remove yourself.

If you have any concerns regarding your carpets and upholstery, call the professionals.

For help from your local experts, find your local ServiceMaster Clean today.

Why should you pay a company to clean your carpets if I can hire or buy a machine yourself?

Hiring a machine from your local supermarket or DIY store is always an option, but then so is fixing your car with just a spanner!

Are DIY machines all they’re cracked up to be?

With a hired machine, you get what you pay for.

These machines are designed to remove surface-level dirt and do a great job of putting water and detergent down.

But not a great job at removing it.

If you use too much shampoo, the machines are not powerful enough to remove the water and detergent, leaving your carpets wet with a residue for up to and over 24 hours.

With a carpet cleaning professional…

With a professional carpet cleaner like ServiceMaster Clean, your carpets are in the hands of a professional with £20,000+ worth of carpet cleaning machinery, professional products and years of experience.

We even clean furniture and upholstery, too!

Your carpets will be clean and dry within hours, so your home will be back to normal in no time.

The secret to professional carpet cleaning is the hot water extraction system.

Our specialist equipment removes dirt, shampoo residue and water from carpets so they stay cleaner for longer.

Professional vs. home cleaning

It’s not that fair to compare a hired machine and a professional company. It’s apples and oranges.

Experience, knowledge, equipment and effort – we will move all your furniture out of the way so you do not have to – you get what you pay for!

ServiceMaster Clean can apply a special fabric protector, giving fantastic resistance to spills, making them easy to mop up if cleaned away quickly.

The fabric protector also contains a unique anti-bacterial additive which kills many viruses and bacteria.

We recommend a professional cleaning of your carpets every six to twelve months to keep them free of dirt and looking fresh and to extend their usage.

You have already invested by purchasing your carpets, so why not look after them and ensure they can go the distance?

After all, would you try and fix your car with a spanner?

Don’t waste your waste this holiday season.

Let’s be real… the holidays generate a lot of waste.

From cooking packaging to toy boxes, chocolate wrappers and paper, there is no shortage of rubbish to haul away once the bins get collected again.

Thankfully, the importance of recycling is becoming recognised more every day.

But, even with our hearts in the right place, we can all still get things wrong.

Many plants and depots often find items with no place in the recycling.

If your council follows a commingled recycling policy, this is especially bad as it means a whole batch has to be sent to a landfill site anyway!

We’ve compiled a handy guide to help you know what festive items are recyclable and which are destined for landfill.

General Tips

Before we get too into Christmas crackers and sweetie wrappers, there are some rules of thumb to follow:

  • Put lids back on jars and bottles
  • Make sure any packaging is empty before binning
  • Keep items separate
  • Ensure items are clean and dry
  • Flatten cardboard

Different councils across the UK will have different approaches and guidelines regarding recycling.

You can use Recycle Now to get information on your local policy and recycling facilities.

Food waste

Now, this is a big one. What goes on your plate is a big part of any festive celebration. But, so is what goes in your bin.

When binning food waste, make sure you follow the aforementioned best practices.

You can recycle:

  • Glass bottles and jars – but not drinking glasses or Pyrex, as these have different melting points and are recycled differently.
  • Drinks cans and food tins
  • Milk cartons
  • Biscuit trays and tins
  • Crisp tubes (Pringles)

You can’t recycle:

  • Black plastic – the black pigment cannot be picked up by the laser technology used in the sorting process.
  • Metal tubes (tomato puree)
  • Cooking oil tins
  • Sweet wrappers
  • Crisp packets

Wrapping paper

For getting rid of wrapping paper, you may have heard of the scrunch test. Our tip here is: try it!

By scrunching wrapping paper into a ball, you can tell whether or not it can be recycled.

How does this work? Simple: if the paper stays in a ball, it is recyclable. However, when the paper is filled with too much glitter, foil, or sticky tape, it is non-recyclable.

When this happens, the paper will bounce back if you try to scrunch it, and it must go into general waste.

For eco-friendly wrapping:

  • Try to avoid wrapping paper that is dyed, laminated, or has glitter on it.
  • Choose eco-friendly paper, like 100% recycled paper, fabric, scarves, newspapers, maps, or old magazines.
  • Because sticky tape is not recyclable, try a specialist recyclable Washi or masking tape. Or try using things like string or ribbon instead.

For wrapping ideas in this vein, check out furoshiki – the Japanese art of wrapping gifts in fabric.

Un-Recyclable items

As you may have gathered, you cannot organise materials by de-facto can and cannot be recycled.

Some items must not be recycled and need to be disposed of differently.

  • Nappies cannot be recycled and need to go into general waste
  • Not all plastics are recyclable. You cannot recycle plant pots, tubs, trays (think toothpaste), or rigid plastics like toys, Tupperware or CD/DVD cases

Some items can be recycled or disposed of economically, but not through your recycling collection.

  • Batteries thrown away alongside general waste/recycling can become punctured or crushed. This can cause them to explode and start fires. So, dispose of them safely by taking them to your local recycling plant or supermarket.
  • Fabrics and textiles cannot be placed in with other recycling and should be taken to a collection point, clothes bank, or charity shop to be gotten rid of.

Need more help?

We hope that these tips help you recycle responsibly this holiday season.

Festive stain removal tips from ServiceMaster Clean.

Hosting holiday mingles can be stressful, but dealing with unwanted pesky stains can make your head spin.

Before you put hours of work into getting rid of stains, ensure you have the right tools and products.

At ServiceMaster Clean, we’ve been experts in carpet and upholstery cleaning for over 60 years, with the professional tools and expertise to remove any stains that should threaten your carpets this festive season.

With our handy tips, you’ll be able to get out lingering and in-the-moment stains.

Spot Hero

These tools include our patented ServiceMaster Clean Spot Hero, which distils all of our cleaning know-how into one handy bottle full of the power to eradicate most tough stains from carpet and upholstery. Including…

Red wine

With wine, especially red, it’s vital to blot it immediately with a white microfibre cloth until all the liquid has been absorbed to stop it from spreading.

Blotting is essential instead of wiping, as wiping may spread the stain further.

Once the liquid is absorbed, spray Spot Hero on a cloth to remove the remaining stain.

Hot chocolate and eggnog

These delicious holiday beverages can leave behind some ugly stains.

If the stain persists, use Spot Hero or mix white vinegar (one cup) and warm water (two cups) and gently work through the stain, then rinse again with warm water and blot the remaining moisture with a dry microfibre cloth.

Butter and grease

The grease in butter can set in quickly, making it a tricky but not impossible stain.

Start by removing the excess butter from the area, then dip a corner of a dry microfibre cloth into the water and coat liberally with salt, then hold it against the stain – don’t rub.

Hold it for about a minute, and then dust away the salt with another damp part of the cloth.

Or, if you want to avoid the chemistry lesson, use Spot Hero!

Cake icing

While decorating cakes and cookies is a fun family activity, icing is one stain you don’t want to mess with.

Go after these stains as soon as possible, scraping the excess off with a knife or spoon so it doesn’t dry.

Then, use Spot Hero to remove the stain.

Professional Repairs

Some stains are too stubborn to be removed without professional equipment.

Nothing says the holidays like candles everywhere, but no one wants to spill wax on a vintage tablecloth.

Should food colouring spill onto your carpet, you will require professional help from experts like your local ServiceMaster Clean technicians.

Our experts can use the latest tools to remove stains or, if they are set firmly into the carpet, will deploy services like a bonded insert to get your carpets looking fresh and clean in time for the new year!

“I can do the splits!”

Describe a recent workday:

“I arrive at work at 7.30 am to load the van with the equipment needed for the day and fill our water bowsers.”

“Today’s job is external cleaning for a local housing authority, so we need plenty of water onboard!”

“With the van loaded, we set off for the day’s work – preparing external walls of residential buildings ready for repainting by the decorating team.”

“On-site, we do a quick walk around to check for hazards and then begin cleaning. With our specialist equipment, we high-pressure jet wash the walls, cleaning off the dirt and algae.”

“When all the walls are cleaned, we clear any debris to ensure we leave the site clean and tidy. Our final job is to take photos of the finished work, and then it’s time to pack up the van and head back to the warehouse. Back at the warehouse, I unload the van [and] check the job sheet for tomorrow.”

Need your carpets cleaning?

Carpets in commercial spaces generally get a lot of footfall so they can get dirty quickly.

A regular carpet cleaning schedule will aid in improving the cleanliness and hygiene of your environment, improve the appearance of your carpet, and help it to last longer.

With a team of trained and professional carpet cleaners and our specialist equipment, we can help keep your carpets in tip-top condition.

In this blog post, the team at ServiceMaster Clean Devon shares how they ensure quality commercial carpet cleaning services.

Benefits of regular carpet cleaning

  • Regular carpet cleaning can prevent the flattening of carpet piles, saving time and money on replacement.
  • Frequent cleaning removes dust, dirt, germs and bacteria, which get deep into the carpet and often cause staining and traffic marks.
  • Plus, you’ll have peace of mind that you’re maintaining the highest hygiene standards on your premises.

ServiceMaster Clean’s carpet cleaning services

Pre-clean site visit

We’ll visit your premises to provide a quotation for the carpet cleaning.

This visit involves thoroughly inspecting all carpeted areas to assess the scope of work.

We’ll discuss timings and schedule a date and time that’s least disruptive to your business operations.

We can do the cleaning outside your regular business hours if convenient.

Carpet clean

We use specialist, high-grade equipment for commercial carpet cleaning.

The process features a hot-rinse extraction to remove deep-set grit and dirt from your carpet and rugs so they stay clean for longer.

Using a hot water extraction system provides the best cleaning and, unlike other cleaning systems, ensures no shampoo or residues are left, which can cause carpets to get dirtier quickly.

It also means the carpet will dry within a few hours of cleaning, ensuring minimal downtime.

Ongoing care

To maintain the health of your carpets, they’ll require a regular cleaning programme.

We’ll recommend a schedule tailored to your carpet’s usage, whether monthly, quarterly, bi-annually or annually.

Our teams at ServiceMaster Clean Devon and beyond are fully insured, accredited and certified to carry out commercial carpet cleaning, and our hot water extraction system results in the best, residue-free clean.
