What are the most common causes of dents in carpeting?

One of the biggest causes of denting in carpeting is furniture being left in one place for too long.

This is because the weight of the furniture compresses the pile on the carpet, causing dents to appear.

DIY repairs for carpet dents

You could move the furniture and vacuum several times – or gently lift the pile with your fingers.

You could also put an ice cube on the dent and let it soak in and then move the pile with a spoon or your fingers to move the pile around.

Or spray the dented area with water and use a hair dryer on a low setting about 6 inches from the carpet, then blow dry the area until fully dry.

As a top tip – run your fingers through the pile whilst you dry it to help the pile back up.

How to prevent dents in the carpet

To prevent dents in your carpet, you can buy carpet pads or gliders to place under the feet of heavy furniture they absorb and balance out the weight of your furniture.

Move your furniture around your room regularly – this could still leave dents, but because the furniture hasn’t been there a long time, the carpet pile should spring back.

Rugs are great for helping to prevent dents in your carpets – especially under dining room tables or coffee tables.

How to clean stains from a sun lounger

No matter the type of stain, if you’re self-cleaning a sun lounger, follow these steps for best results:

  1. Blot up a spillage or carefully “scrape” up the product ASAP after the stain has happened.
  2. Use a mixture of soap and warm water (or Spot Hero* for best results) with a lint-free cloth (tea towels work well) and dab the stain from the outside, working your way into the middle. This might need repeating a few times depending on the stain.
  3. Wait for the stain to dry
  4. Vacuum the area

How to clean those summer stains

Now that you’ve dropped the children off at school, packed them into a taxi or waved them off at the bus stop you’re about to feel yourself again…. but what’s waiting for you as you open the front door?

Felt tip pen stains? Chocolate marks? Remnants of tomato ketchup? Maybe a little red wine stain?

Removing Ink Stains 

Using distilled white vinegar

Fill a spray bottle with equal parts of water and distilled white vinegar. Dab the stained area, and then rinse with warm, soapy water. For a carpet that smells as good as it looks, add a couple of drops of concentrated lavender water or lemon.

Using washing powder 

Fill a bowl with warm water add a teaspoon of washing powder (such as Persil) and mix.

Dab the stained area with the solution until the stain surrenders – and voila!

Removing Chocolate

From upholstery

  1. Scrape off excess chocolate.
  2. Mix one tablespoon of washing-up liquid with two cups of cool water.
  3. Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with the solution.
  4. Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the stain disappears.
  6. Sponge with cold water and blot dry.

From carpets

  1. Scrape off excess chocolate.
  2. Mix one tablespoon of washing-up liquid with two cups of warm water.
  3. Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with the solution.
  4. Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the stain disappears or is no longer absorbed into the cloth.
  6. If the stain remains, mix one tablespoon of ammonia (Caution: Never mix chlorine bleach and ammonia – the resulting fumes are hazardous) with two cups of warm water.
  7. Sponge the stain with the ammonia solution.
  8. Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  9. Sponge with cold water and blot dry.

Removing Ketchup

From fabric

  1. Working from the back of the stain, flush with cold water.
  2. Pre-treat with a liquid laundry detergent, tamp the stain and let stand for several minutes.
  3. Rinse well.
  4. Sponge with white vinegar.
  5. Rinse well.
  6. Repeat Steps 2 to 5 until you have removed as much of the stain as possible.
  7. Pre-treat with a prewash stain remover, and then launder.
  8. If the stain remains, rub it with a liquid laundry detergent, and then soak it in warm water for up to 30 minutes.
  9. Launder again, with bleach, if necessary.

From upholstery

  1. Sponge with cool water.
  2. Mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent with two cups of cool water.
  3. Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with the detergent solution.
  4. Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the stain disappears.
  6. Sponge with cold water and blot dry.

From carpet

  1. Sponge with cool water.
  2. Mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent with two cups of warm water.
  3. Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with the detergent solution.
  4. Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the stain disappears or is no longer absorbed into the cloth.
  6. If the stain remains, mix one tablespoon of ammonia (Caution: Never mix chlorine bleach and ammonia – the resulting fumes are hazardous) with 1/2 cup of warm water.
  7. Sponge the stain with the ammonia solution.
  8. Blot until the liquid is absorbed.
  9. Sponge with cold water and blot dry. 

Removing red wine stains

From fabric

  1. Sponge the spot with cool water or soak for about 30 minutes in a basin of cool water.
  2. Pretreat with a prewash stain remover.
  3. Launder. If it’s safe for the fabric, add chlorine bleach to the wash.

From upholstery & carpet

  1. With a white cloth, try and blot as much of the red wine stain as you can. The more you can soak up, the less you’ll have to remove.
  2. After you finish blotting, pour a bit of cold water directly onto the wine stain. Doing this helps dilute what remains of the stain, making blotting a bit easier. Continue blotting until you find that no more of the stain will come out.
  3. Now prepare a baking soda paste by mixing a three-to-one ratio of water to baking soda and applying it to the affected area. Once the paste is dry, vacuum the stain.

  1. Trim your stems at an angle

You might have heard this one if you got the flowers from a florist, as it’s a must for proper flower care: Trim the stems at an angle before you put them in water.

Why is this advised?

Your flowers drink through a part of their stems called the xylem, which carries water and nutrients from the root to the flower.

Once picked, the end of a flower dries out, so cutting the end of their stems before putting them in water allows them to absorb water and drink properly.

Cutting them at an angle is advised because it allows more surface area to drink from.

While cutting straight is harmless, cutting at a 45-degree angle means the entire stem’s surface area is always in contact with the water and can absorb more helpful nutrients to live longer.

  1. Remove foliage under the water line

Any leaves and foliage and or leaves under the water line of your flowers should be removed.

This is because any foliage left under the water line will begin to rot, encouraging bacteria growth and damaging the plant.

  1. Add bleach and sugar solution

Hear us out on this one…

Add a little bleach to the flower water.

Add 1/4 teaspoon bleach per 1 litre of water.

Alternatively, you can add a solution of bleach and sugar.

Add three drops of bleach and one teaspoon of sugar in 1-quart (1 litre) water to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and prevent the water from growing cloudy.

  1. The penny drops

Copper is a natural fungicide, so dropping a penny into the vase will also help kill off the harmful bacteria festering in the old water and try to kill off your lovely bouquet.

  1. Refresh the water

The tools we use for carpet cleaning

Pump Spray

We use this to concentrate and apply the exclusive, industrial-strength products used to clean your carpets.

We place the cleaning product within the machine and pump the pressure up. Think of it almost like a pressure cooker.

We then spray the carpet with the product and let it sit before we utilise the extractor.

For smaller or harder-to-reach areas, we utilise a hand sprayer which performs the above but is easier to use on smaller surfaces.

 Extractor machine

Once the product has been applied, we use the extractor to remove the product and clean the carpet.

It has two water tankers attached to a long metal pole (or wand) via pipes.

The head of the wand is what we put onto the carpet (or whatever we are cleaning) to do the bulk of the cleaning.

First, clean, warm water is poured into one tank (or we put in cold water and heat it – a bit like a giant kettle).

Then there is a separate tank to collect the dirty water after the cleaning.

Then we run the wand over the carpet, which pushes clean water into the carpet and sucks out the dirty water.

We also have a smaller version of the extractor called a Spotter that is easier to manoeuvre and is used for smaller or fiddlier items like stair carpets and sofas.

The Roto Machine

This is a large machine with pads at the bottom which we use on hard floors like Amtico, tiles, and stone, but that we sometimes use on some carpets and works similarly to the extractor.

Water is placed into a tank while any product is sprayed onto the floor.

The machine then moves over the floor to clean it. We can also use this machine to strip products off the floor.

We do this by changing the pads on the bottom of the machine – some are more abrasive than others. Think of it like sandpaper coming in different grits.

Tampico brush

Used for spot cleaning and removing stains, visually, the Tampico brush looks like a scrubbing brush… but it isn’t!

The bristles are designed to snap if too much pressure is applied to the item we are cleaning.

While this seems like a potentially odd design choice, it is done to make causing damage to your carpet or rug very difficult.

This brush is one of the more labour-intensive tools in our arsenal, as it is used for cleaning stubborn areas by hand.

Agitator

The Agitator is a piece of equipment we use in deep cleaning carpets that require a more comprehensive cleaning service.

This is a tool that we use after we have applied a product.

It pushes the cleaning product into the pile of the carpet/rug to perform a deep clean.

We also use this for lifting the pile. Therefore, making it easier for us to carry out a deep clean.

We supported them in these endeavours by providing supplies and cash donations to help them in their cause, particularly in supplying items in great demand, such as food and women’s and babies’ toiletry products. The items brought in or purchased as staff donations were compiled and back by our staff at the end of September and dropped off at the local Salvation Army branch.

“The beneficiary of our Founder’s Day celebration effort this year was the Salvation Army which is based about 100 meters from our UK franchise support centre in Wigston, Leicestershire. We chose the Salvation Army for several reasons including the fact that they are literally on our doorstep, it is also good to know that in a small way we are helping the work that they are doing for families, the young, old, and vulnerable & those most in need in our local community.  Whilst the Founder’s Day celebration is a focal point for the team here, we encourage & continue to live out our ‘We Care’ ambition with other charity events throughout the year.”

Providing a complimentary clean
