What are carpet draught marks?

ServiceMaster Clean’s carpet cleaning experts explain all you need to know about carpet draught marks.

Weird marks on the edge of your carpet? These are what’s known as carpet draught marks.

These are dark soiled areas on your carpet commonly found around the edges of a room, by the skirting boards or in doorways. Sometimes you might even get them in the centre of the room as well if there are gaps in between the floorboards.

But what are carpet draught marks? How do they come about and what can you do about them?

In this blog post, carpet cleaning and care expert Jennie Holmes from ServiceMaster Clean Leicester tells all.

What causes carpet draught marks?

Carpet draught marks happen when air moves through gaps, causing a gathering of dust, oil (from cooking for traffic fumes) etc. In these cases, our carpet acts as a filter for that dust and traps the dust in the fibres of your carpet. This then visually appears as dark patches on your carpet.

This can be unsightly especially on a light-coloured carpet and is very difficult to remove. Professional cleaning can improve this, but a complete removal isn’t always a possibility.

If you haven’t put in preventative measures in place, the marks will simply keep coming back.

What can you do to prevent carpet draught marks?

  • Seal the gaps to stop the air from moving: You could do this with Mastic Fillers or lay hardboard sheeting or paper across the floor before the carpet and underlay are fitted.
  • Use underlay as a barrier between the gaps and your carpet.
  • Use the crevice tool on your vacuum cleaner to vacuum the thin gap between the skirting boars and the carpet as well as generally vacuuming your room.
