What is the difference between an upright vacuum and a cordless stick vacuum?
The main draw of cordless vacuums is that they are hassle-free – you don’t get tangled up in cables, which can be great if you have pets or small children – and they are also easier to store.
Ultimately, it comes down to your circumstances and preferences, but there are differences.
Upright vacuums: Are typically more cumbersome to carry and use but generally have better suction.
Cordless vacuums: These generally have smaller waste bins and will also need charging, but you can get cordless with boost features to improve suction.
Is a cordless vacuum less powerful than an upright vacuum?
Generally, yes. This is because the motor is smaller.
However, you can get some vacuums with a “boost” mode to improve the suction. The downside is that it will use more power so the battery will run out quicker.
But they are generally more eco-friendly because they only use power/electricity when in use, unlike an upright vacuum that will use power all the time it is plugged in.
Things to consider when buying cordless vacuum cleaners
- Weight: cordless are generally lighter.
- Battery life and the time it takes to charge the battery (you don’t want to run out of battery halfway through cleaning!)
- Waste bin storage: Cordless vacuums are smaller than uprights, so you might have to stop and empty your waste. It is a good idea to empty this regularly, otherwise it could reduce the suction.
- Suction power: Upright vacuums generally have more suction because they are plugged into the mains. Again, cordless vacuums have booster features that you can use at the expense of battery life.
How to maintain a Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
Read the instructions for your make and model and get familiar with the components of your machine. Here are some general guidelines:
- Dust waste: Empty this regularly, at least after each use. On some models, you can wash with water and a cloth or soft brush to remove dirt/debris, but check the manual’s instructions first! Ensure it is dry before re-attaching it and using your vacuum.
- Filter: Locate and clean the filter according to the manual’s instructions. Always ensure it is bone dry before you put it back into your vacuum. This should be done monthly for the best results.
- Roller Brush/Beater Bar: Turn the vacuum off and remove the battery. Locate the roller and remove it from the machine (check instructions) or use scissors and/or a cleaning gadget to remove hair threads.
- Hose and Wheels: Check for blockages and remove them immediately.
- Exterior of your vacuum: Use a damp cloth or wipe. Pay attention to the handle and buttons as dirt can accumulate in these areas.
- Avoid overcharging the battery: This will prolong the battery’s life span – always check the instructions.
