How to make sure your Halloween party is scarily good.

Halloween is coming.

It’s the perfect holiday for people who love sweets and chocolate, dressing up, and being a big kid.

Whether you’re planning a ghostly gathering for kids or grown-ups, some Halloween essentials can’t be missed.

Here are our tips on preparing the perfect Halloween monster bash.

  1. Make it age-appropriate

No matter your guest demographic, ensure it is appropriate for the age of your guests.

For example, some scarier decorations might be too intense for young kids.

If your guests are all adults, you’re probably safe to go all out with the fright factor, but the last thing you want from a fun kid’s party is to upset them!

  1. Avoid hard-to-clean substances

In our experience, some spooky substances are an absolute monster to remove from surfaces and furnishings.

While they are essentials for many, substances like fake blood, silly string, and the makeup from Halloween costume sets can easily stain carpets, curtains, and upholstery and are notoriously difficult to remove without professional assistance.

If any spillages or issues with these substances occur, your local ServiceMaster Clean technicians will remove them in a flash with their specialist expertise and high-quality equipment.

  1. Set the scene with some monstrous media

Prepare for your guests and set the mood for a fun and festive time with a combo of themed media.

Make a playlist of your favourite songs to get you in the spooky spirit.

Some hits like Thriller and the Monster Mash will surely get guests feeling Halloween-y.

And if you don’t have time to make your own, check out our Halloween playlist that’s sure to have your party jumping with fright.

You could also play classic Halloween films in the background for extra ambience.

For horror fans, you could play one of the many Halloween or Scream films, Friday the 13th or The Exorcist.

For a less frightening time, try some appropriate films for a younger audience, like The Corpse Bride, Wendall and Wilde, The Addams Family, or Beetlejuice.

  1. Plan ahead

Your gathering doesn’t need to be a massive expense.

Throwing a memorable, sustainable, but inexpensive party merely requires a little forward-thinking.

The only strangers turning up on your doorstep should be trick-or-treaters.

Establish a “ghouls list” and get an exact headcount for the evening by specifying whether or not people should bring plus 1s.

When you invite your guests, set an RSVP date.

If you host guests often, you can also use decorations that can be used more than once.

You can source a lot of cheap and inexpensive decorations from discount stores.

Halloween is meant to be scary, but one thing you shouldn’t be afraid of is asking for help.

Ask your guests to help out by bringing beverages or their favourite (possibly themed) dish.

This might save you valuable prep time ahead of your party.

You can also plan fun activities like games or a prize for the best costume.

  1. Clear away the cobwebs

While giant spider webs are appropriate for Halloween, you don’t want to invite guests into a messy home.

With the potential dangers of a dirty carpet, don’t miss a trick by treating yourself to professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services from ServiceMaster Clean.

As experts in cleaning for over 60 years, we use the best tools, people and equipment to ensure your carpets and furnishing are so clean it’s almost scary!

Buying a second-hand rug? Here are some things to keep in mind.

When buying a new rug, going second-hand is a great and much cheaper alternative to buying new. Not only that, but it contributes to living a more sustainable lifestyle. However, there are some things that you need to consider if you’re thinking about buying a rug second-hand. Things you may not have even been aware of!

Luckily, at ServiceMaster Clean, we know rugs. With over 60 years in the cleaning industry as one of the UK’s leading rug cleaning specialists, we’ve seen just about every type of rug you could imagine, in just about every condition. That’s why our experts have put their heads together to give you a comprehensive list of all the things you need to look for when buying a second-hand rug.

Flammability

The last thing you want when you get a new rug is for it to immediately go up in flames. To put your mind at rest, you should be checking if any rugs you’re looking at meet the right safety regulations. If it’s up to par, a rug should have a label confirming that it meets The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations Act 1988 (which was later amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010). This essentially means that it meets certain criteria to make it safer. Any older items will not have this label and potentially could be a hazard. So, be on the lookout.

Infestations

If possible, we’re certain you want to avoid buying a brand-new rug that’s been infested with creepy crawlies. Unfortunately, if you don’t inspect it properly, you could come to find your new rug is full of all sorts of insects. Yuck! Common critters include bed bugs and carpet moths, so be on the lookout for these in particular. Bear in mind though that they will be harder to spot with just the naked eye. So, look for holes in the pile as a tell-tale sign, and take a magnifying glass with you!

Does the rug smell?

Stains are one thing, but if you notice that a rug has a strong odour to it, it’s best to walk away. Smells on rugs can linger and are notoriously hard to remove.

Moving the rug

Onto the more practical questions of transport now. Can you move the rug in your car or do you need a van? How heavy is it? Will it fit into the space you need it for? These are all important questions and need to be considered carefully before purchase. Trust us, there is nothing worse than being stuck with a massive rug that you can’t shift!

Is the rug dirty or stained?

As seen above, a lot of things might put you off a second-hand rug. But stains don’t have to be one of them. You can clean some items yourself and some stains and lift easily with the right know-how. It all depends on the type of material so be sure to check the specifications of the rug. A key question to ask is: “Will it need to be wet cleaned or dry cleaned?” If you’re unsure, or still have questions about rug cleaning, it’s best to get the professionals in.

How we are celebrating ServiceMaster Brands Founders Day.

The 1st of October was a special day here for all of ServiceMaster Brands: Founders Day. Our annual observance across the ServiceMaster Brand family celebrates ServiceMaster Brands’ worldwide second anniversary as a stand-alone company. That’s why we’re paying homage to our founders and communities who made ServiceMaster Brands as we know it today. To do this, our franchisees across the UK are giving back. In Leicester, our ServiceMaster HQ and ServiceMaster Clean Leicester team have come together to support the local Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army is an organisation designed to help local people through Charity Shops, Food Banks and also provide support to homeless and elderly people and anyone else locally who is in need.

Providing donations

We supported them in these endeavours by providing supplies and cash donations to help them in their cause, particularly in supplying items in great demand, such as food and women’s and babies’ toiletry products. The items brought in or purchased as staff donations were compiled and back by our staff at the end of September and dropped off at the local Salvation Army branch.

ServiceMaster Brands UK Managing Director Alan Lewin says that to him, our service to the local community is just a small part of the way we deliver our value of care every day.

“The beneficiary of our Founder’s Day celebration effort this year was the Salvation Army which is based about 100 meters from our UK franchise support centre in Wigston, Leicestershire. We chose the Salvation Army for several reasons including the fact that they are literally on our doorstep, it is also good to know that in a small way we are helping the work that they are doing for families, the young, old, and vulnerable & those most in need in our local community.  Whilst the Founder’s Day celebration is a focal point for the team here, we encourage & continue to live out our ‘We Care’ ambition with other charity events throughout the year.”

All done! Our team with the donations packed and ready to go to the local centre

Providing a complimentary clean

Not only that, but the team from ServiceMaster Clean in Leicester went above and beyond by providing a complimentary clean at the local centre when they went to drop off our donations, and were able to clean the carpets in the entryway to make them look brand spanking new, all free of charge!

If you would benefit from a similar service, the ServiceMaster Clean Leicester team is giving back to the local community with up to 58% off rug cleaning services on collection or delivery for all customers in an LE postcode. How we have been supporting Alzheimer’s Patients this year.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a month designed to raise awareness around Dementia and other forms of Alzheimer’s, and to support people across the globe who are living with the condition. This year the focus is on raising awareness, with the theme “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s” continuing from 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a particular impact on the condition and the people living with Alzheimer’s worldwide. However, a 2019 report found that much of the world’s general population still believes that Dementia is a normal result of the ageing process – which highlights the need for more knowledge about Alzheimer’s and its conditions to be more widespread.

This year, ServiceMaster Clean, along with the rest of ServiceMaster Brands UK, has partnered with Dementia Friends, an initiative from Alzheimer’s Society as one of their partnered businesses.

What are Dementia Friends?

Dementia Friends is an initiative aiming to change the perception of dementia. They strive to create a better quality of life for those living with the condition and to further our understanding of the condition. They provide a host of useful information to inform members of the public, as well as partner with businesses to help improve their services and make them more accessible and Dementia friendly. This year, we have worked with them to make sure that our services our as such, and that we can provide the right support and service to our customers that are living with Dementia.

Furthermore, we have taken part in multiple fundraising initiatives as part of ServiceMaster Brands UK and have managed to raise £1,378.50 for the charity – which will go towards funding services from the Alzheimer’s Society for research into care and cures, providing support and training, and campaigning for the rights of people living with dementia. We will be continuing our support throughout the rest of 2022, so keep up to date with us on social media to see how you can get involved. Or get involved today by donating to Alzheimer’s Society or by becoming a Dementia friend.

To learn more about the services we provide, and how we might be able to help you or someone you know living with Dementia, give us a call today on 0800 021 3112.
