Spilled Mulled Wine on the Carpet?

Mulled wine: it’s a festive favourite, sure to spice up any holiday get together. But what do you do if it gets spilled on your beloved carpets?

First thing’s first, don’t panic. You might not know what to do when faced with the sight of a great big wine stain on your floor, but we do. The key is to act fast. Time is of the essence here; the longer the stain is left to set in, the harder it will be to get rid of.

Your first instinct might be to reach for the paper towels, and you’d be right. Initially, you should be trying to soak up as much of the wine as possible with them, but make sure that you’re only dabbing the mark. Don’t wipe or rub it, as this will only cause it to spread. After that, dampen the spill with some water and then go back in with the paper towels to absorb this.

On wood floors, this should do the job, and there are no extra steps needed beyond maybe giving it a once over with a mop.

But on carpet or upholstery, the best thing to do is to then use talcum powder. Sprinkle it liberally on the stain and cover the area with more paper towels. Next, you’ll need a heavy book and some cling film. Wrap the book in the cling film, lay it over the top of the mark, and leave it there for at least twelve hours. During this time, the mulled wine will be pressed into the talcum powder and absorbed into it, which should allow you to vacuum it up the next day.

An extra tip is that if any of the spillages land on an item of clothing, you should rinse it with cool water before putting it in the wash as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
