Case study: Heritage restoration & specialist carpet cleaning
Specialist restoration of heritage carpets in a high-traffic environment
This case study from ServiceMaster Clean Devon demonstrates the importance of expert care when cleaning carpets in sensitive, high-footfall heritage settings. When historic fibres and prestigious surroundings must be preserved, a considered, specialist approach is essential. In this instance, our team delivered a restorative deep clean that enhanced the appearance of key visitor areas while protecting the integrity and longevity of the carpets in a Grade I-listed property.

The challenge
Working within a Grade I listed environment presents unique logistical challenges. Our team operated under strict site protocols, including:
- Coordinated site access: navigating complex estate driveways and adhering to secure gate-entry procedures to ensure no disruption to the grounds.
- Infrastructure management: utilising remote water sources (up to 200 yards from the work zone) and strategically located power points to protect the historic fabric of the building.
- Scale of task: the main staircase features 6ft wide runners spanning over 100ft (32 steps) plus expansive landings, requiring consistent pressure and temperature control across a large surface area.

Our methodology
To achieve a “visitor-ready” finish while protecting the delicate fibres, we implemented a multi-stage cleaning process:
- Fibre-specific preparation: Detailed pre-vacuuming followed by a bespoke pre-treatment solution tailored to the specific carpet composition.
- Mechanical agitation: We used mechanical scrubbing on high-traffic treads to gently break down heavy soil deposits without damaging the weave.
- Advanced extraction: Using our Ashby Enforcer high-pressure hot water extraction units, we removed deep-seated dirt and allergens. These commercial-grade machines are vital for heritage sites as they offer superior soil removal with considerably reduced drying times.
- Specialist finishing: Targeted spot treatments were applied to stubborn stains, followed by high-velocity air movers to ensure the runners were dry and safe for immediate use.

The results
The restoration successfully revitalised the aesthetic of the North Tower and main staircase, lifting the “brown” appearance caused by heavy footfall and restoring the carpets to their original vibrant colours.
- Total work areas: 56 steps and multiple large-scale landings.
- Outcome: Full soil extraction and fibre protection, extending the lifespan of these historic assets.
- Compliance: Full documentation provided, including a detailed digital log of before, during, and after photography for National Trust records.
